Grace Jones - Love Is The Drug

Love Is The Drug came out on Warm Leatherette in '81 but I don't own that. I own the best-of comp from '85 - Island Life. Because of the art (see above).

Philly Groove

Not this past weekend but the one prior, fellow Dollar Bin Jammers Billy Werner, Shawn Ryan and I had the privilege of seeing Danny Krivit and Ron Trent play a warehouse party in our nation's capital, just days before Barack Obama took the oath of office. Given the timing, it's an understatement to say that everyone was in a celebratory mood, and the sight of the Capitol building from our third floor vantage only added to the giddiness.

An unbelievable night of house music, at least until the cops came at 3. I can only imagine what Danny and Ron had in store for the final hours, but I'd say we got more than our money's worth. Big, big thanks to Chris Burns for doing this, and I hope to make it to more of his events in the future. For now, here's some Danny Krivit with a little Philly flavor.

Michael McDonald - I Keep Forgettin

Spend some time today singing your favorite songs in the manner of Michael McDonald - no consonants, one-piece haircut/beard set, a glass of Cutty Sark, neat. Smells vaguely of sex but it may just be some weird cologne. Either way it makes everybody uncomfortable except for your aunt. A sexy wolf on quaaludes, live from the piano bar.

THIS IS A SECRET

... or at least it should be. Riva Starr is giving away a KRS-One remix that is quickly becoming a staple in my sets for it's ability to ease Philly's drunken dancefloors into techier territory.

Champion

I was just getting tracks together for tomorrow's big Barbary show when it occurred to me that EVERYONE needs to hear Nick Catchdub's recent Kanye remix. I knew it would rule as soon as I saw the word "jeep." And for those of you who are less prone to hip-hop throwbacks, check out Cousin Cole's amazing acid mix of the same track.

Also, what a crazy coincidence that Skinny just did a Kanye related post this afternoon!

Not Like I Used Too

Been digging up some old records from like four years ago when I was still all vinyl thuggin and reppin hard for album cuts off major label rap records. This has nothing to do with that, but around those same weird days there was a time when Kanye put out three basically identical records: "Get By" by Talib Kweli, "This Way" by Dilated Peoples and "Used to Love U" by John Legend.

The first was a classic (and I don't usually ride for Kweli), the second was kind of sad, really, but the third had a decent run on the radio and then melted into obscurity. Which is a shame because it's a great little bittersweet jam with deep bass and Dilla-esque crowd-hyping vocals arbitrarily shoehorned into the background.

Unknown Artist...

Here's a solid early 90's house track I found on this bootleg. I'm really drawn in by the catchy horn loop. If anyone knows who produced this track, please leave a comment. Identified!!!

You many notice a slight hum at the quiet parts, which is on the record itself and did not occur in the ripping process.

Just Right

Not the Pierre you're thinking of, although this record does feature two other big names on mixing duties: Junior Vasquez and Shep Pettibone. I did initially suspect that this was in fact an early record from the acid house Pierre (as he and Vasquez were buds), but his own website doesn't list it in his discography, so the identity of this one remains a mystery.

Darkroom Mix

Here's a nice & slow mix I just finished before the holidays. These tracks are more conducive to spacing out than freaking out, so don't grab a Sparks (R.I.P.) for this listen. Maybe just dim the lights and cuddle up with your robot lover. Also, this was recorded live in one take with all vinyl.

Sharon Redd - Never Give You Up

Jeah, this joint should keep the spot rockin' all night on some cliche' type ishhhh. But no honestly this track is thurough like henry! It starts off a nice disco groove you can vibe to but you have to stay locked to around 2.5 - 3 minutes it get dubbed out on the electro tip real lovely. I know De La sampled this on the Stakes is High LP. Shine so fine in the Oh Nine you go blind!

Ben Manzone's Got The Cure For Your Sunday Blues

Ben Manzone, aka Benguin of New York's acclaimed Foreal People crew put together this funk and soulful mix and it merits mass consumption. Ben is a master selector and a devoted digger of all things soulful; his collection boasts some impressive sounds and when you work with people like 100 Limousines CEO Josh Dunn and NYC's Love On The Run you need to keep your game tight and tidy.

Ben is currently scoping out locations for a mellow Sunday afternoon session ("no mixing, no electronic dance music," says our homie). So if you are in Brooklyn, keep your eyes peeled and follow the groove.

Tracklist

Curtis Mayfield - Give Me Your Love
Solomon Burke - Over and Over
The Lovejoys - Stranger
Bobbi Humphrey - Chicago Damn
Donald Byrd - Wind Parade
George Benson - Down Here On The Ground
Gil-Scot Heron - Legend In His Mind
Stevie Wonder - Too High
Marlena Shaw - I'm Back For More
Prince - In Love

Phil-L.A. of Soul 45s

Periodically I'll have a genre-specific record ripping binge. I have a non-dance oriented residency every Sunday at North Bowl in Philly, and I've been finding the urge to play a lot of soul and R&B. Unfortunately, most of my soul collection is sitting in shoeboxes. So last week I took out a stack of 45s and went to work.

Right there at the beginning of Box Number One was a solid grip of Phil-L.A. of Soul singles. All in all it's a good imprint, featuring early work from one of my favorites, Little Beaver and also a number of releases by later Philly movers and shakers such as Harold Melvin, The Peoples Choice and curiously named outfit The Philly Sound.

Cliff Nobles and Co.'s The Horse (1968) and The Fantastic Johnny C's Boogaloo Down Broadway (1967) were the two chart singles that jumped off the label, which was super prolific in the late 60s. A decent percentage of the subsequent Phil-L.A. Of Soul discography is either songs riffing on The Horse or Broadway (Hitch it to the Horse, Cool Broadway etc). Not surprisingly, these cuts are also the title singles from the label's two LPs. (Many people also know The Horse as the single from the Booker T and the MGs cover album with the bangin metallic silver cover art.)

Phil-L.A. of Soul eventually put out a few Miami-based artists and then disappeared after the late 70s.

Anyways, if you've ever had a dusty finger for 45s, these two should be quite familiar.

My apologies for these records sounding dusty and hissy and burnt as hell but hey, they're records that used to live in somebody's basement that now live in a shoebox at my house.
