Covers Part II

I was going back through a big pile of records that I ripped for Telephoned's (Fool's Gold) "Switchboard" party last winter.  It's a night dedicated to covers, and I've done a covers post before, so I figured I'd follow up.

Here are a couple of zips with some great covers.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - versions by Devo, Mountain and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band.  Shouts to the dude in East LA who sold me a sealed copy of that 103rd Street record for a buck if I'd just help him "get these damn records off the lawn."

Satisfaction - Mediafire Zip

Sing A Simple Song - versions by West Street Mob (in an early '80s electro-rap stylee) and the ever-amazing Booker T and the MGs (who have an entire album of covers, including some utterly forgettable organ-driven schmaltz).

Ain't No Stoppin, 2009

In light of the Phillies SECOND CONSECUTIVE NATIONAL LEAGUE PENNANT, a re-up of one of the most popular tracks ever posted on DBJ:

Bambaataa's Theme

OK, so I dropped this at 2099 the other night, and we couldn't get the timeline straight as to the re-use of the Assault on Precinct 13 Theme - did this Afrika Bambaataa track come before or after the Splash Band? Did the Splash Band play the main theme? Did this sample that or the original soundtrack or was it replayed?

DBJ-ers, help a brother out.

Haircut One Hundred

A while ago I rescued a shitty punk funk track from itself and let it collect dust on my hard drive. It's the perfect secret weapon for your next peak hour post-punk set! Do any of our readers ever get to do those? Maybe my man Tristes Tropiques?

Get On Up Do It Again

This classic has a great break and a lot of flavor. The lyrics are cool too - at one point she says, "you're so sleazy when you tease me." I'm just saying that's hard to beat. Enjoy!

Hot Date

Quality 80s funk/soul jam from hyper-talented West Philly Music School grad Billy Paul, best known for his early 70s hit Me And Mrs. Jones. This is the only uptempo cut from Paul's first album after the end of his relationship with Philly International Records- this is from Total Experience.

Sorry about the dirty-sounding record.

All Night Long

The OG is a certified classic. The instrumental was actually released as the b-side to their following single, "Boys," which I just scored from Beautiful World's dollar bin today. As icing on the cake, I've included a rare Danger Mouse blend Ed Blammo put me on to at Tequila Sunrise last summer. Version away selectah brothas...

The Symphony

I decided to drop some knowledge for those who need a quick lesson on some Hip-Hop ish. When I saw Shawn Ryan post the "Affirmative Action Remix," my first thought was Juice Crew's "Symphony." This possibly may be the best posse cut ever. It was the first Hip-Hop track to make the Otis Redding sample "Hard To Handle" popular. In addition, I also would like to drop my favorite version of "Affirmative Action" that I used to cut up everyday during blunted freestyle sessions. Enjoy and peep the OG Juice crew video!

"Enjoy" Super Rappin No. 2

Okay, so I decided to keep the Enjoy Records label posts going and this is definitely one of my favorites. Super Rappin No. 2 is crazy sick, I love it and so should you. Check it out - always a crowd pleaser!

Bomb the Bass

My jam from back in the day. I found this record when I was 12 for a dollar and have seen many more since. A true dollar bin jam. Enjoy! (in a vocoder voice)

You Can't Hide

A straight up classic for your Valentine's Day. Files of the vocal 12" version aren't too difficult to find, but the instrumental is more of a challenge. I finally found a copy of the 12" at Tequila Sunrise last summer and ripped the elusive side. Though I enjoy David's vocals on the track, I think the instrumental has it's place too.

Also, if you have a couple minutes, here's Greg Wilson doing some tricks with it on TV in '83:

Funky Freshness

"L E O" Part One and Part Two are both ridicules. They're explained on Discogs as New York funk with an Afican percussive bent. Umm, sounds right to me! This joint is pretty rare and let's say it didn't cost a dollar. Try to keep this on the low true Dollar Bin bloggers.
