Imagination - Changes (DJ Apt One Remix)

2008 was all about the economy going in the toilet, the bol Obama winning the presidency and it was also the year the Phillies somehow managed to win the World Series.

What will 2009 bring? I dunno but it's gonna be some whole other shit.

Changes doggie. Changes.

For what it's worth, here's an excellent electroclash track Memory Boy released in 2002(?). On second thought, maybe it isn't even electroclash. It's too pleasant and beautiful to get lumped in with that shit. You be the judge...

Robotique Holiday Party This Friday - With Special Guest: Fit For Use

Attention Philly heads. This Friday, December 19 marks the second annual Robotique Holiday Party. Getting festive with us will be none other than Brooklyn's Drew Heffron, aka Fit For Use. When he is not designing logos for artists on many DBJ playlists (Holy Ghost, for example) Drew is behind the decks or in the studio, editing and remixing classics.

To celebrate his debut in Philly, Mr. Use sent me a fine edit of a Philly classic - Bell and James' "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)". Digital DBJ'ers will be banging this one for sure, just stop in on Friday and say a proper thank you to the man behind the scenes.

The Quick

Zulu Instrumental by The Quick has always been a staple at a Cropsy Family Gathering. Props to my Mom on this one - she has been playing this record since I can remember. The Zulu Instrumental is a great track to open up with or just play in a lounge environment. In fact I think I will give this a spin at my New Years eve gig. Enjoy!

Kelly Marie - Don't Stop Your Love (Skinny's edit)

Kelly Marie - Don't Stop Your Love (Skinny Friedman edit)
Divshare | YSI | 320 kbps

I’ve been meaning to do an edit on this one forever and I finally did on the train home from Baltimore today. I took out the corny sax solo at the top and made the cowbell-laden groove from the middle of the track the intro. Then I added some drums.

Family Tree

Here's a mysterious disco classic - I can't find much about it online, except that the vocalist is Sharon Brown (who happened to be a part of another recent post). Every part of this song, from the horns to the vocals to the percussion, has a very raw and soulful quality to it. I picked it up a while ago on this bootleg, which leads me to believe that this is an old DJ friendly edit. If anyone has additional info on this track, please leave a comment.

Zilla Rocca - Nada (DJ Apt One Remix)

I think this track will go over quite well with the DBJ family. It's a rap remix, yes, but it's got a serious classic disco twist to it with rolling pianos, muted guitar and some great vocals on the bridge. And as I'm sure you nerds are well aware, rap came from disco.

Read a review of the track and grab an exclusive download of the track at 33jones.com.

True Vibes From Monomono - 1974

Not much to say about this one. Absolutely essential Afrobeat/psych from the legendary 1974 album from Monomono, The Dawn Of Awareness. If you see this album, grab it and never let it go. This is the lead-off track and is 4+ minutes of jammy Afrocentric psychedelic truth.

The Red Planet Will Appear Only When Your Mind Is Open

Sex in zero gravity is difficult, but it is possible with the power of techno. Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes engineers a nice cosmic buildup on this track, in one of several contributions made to The Martian's discography by Detroit heavyweights, also including Mike Banks, Drexciya and Octave One to name a few.

Took My Love - Stainless Steele Edit

Photobucket
There are four different versions of this song on the vinyl 12". I chose to edit the MK What Up Dub version for this post. All of them are pretty dope and could be spun out but I think this is the most hype and sounds to me like a joint for the night's peak. I'll try to post the other cuts from the 12" and maybe even do another edit. Word Bond. Oh...btw this is from 1993 on Columbia Records.

RIP Party Arty

DITC - Themes, Dreams and Schemes
DivShare | YSI | 179 kbps

Through the magic of Twitter, I just found out that DJ Premier sent out a mass e-mail announcing the death of Diggin In The Crates associate Party Arty. We almost made it through 2008 without a major death in hip-hop but in the last couple weeks, we lost both MC Breed and now PA. Kinda sad.

I might never have heard of dude had he not been on this track, "Themes, Dreams and Schemes," the b-side of a DITC record that for some reason I used to bump a lot back in 1999. It's a decent song. OC kinda sucks on it but everyone else comes correct, "everyone else" being AG, D-Flow and the homie Party Arty. D-Flow and Party Arty rolled as The Ghetto Dwellas and one can only hope they're sitting on an album of vintage beats from Showbiz and Lord Finesse with their above-average flows that will now see the light of day.

He may or may not be the same person as Stan Spit, who sounds exactly the same and had a pretty good verse on Big L's "Holdin It Down." If someone can clear that up for me, that'd be cool.

Anyways, RIP Party Arty.

Considering when I first talked to Apt One, it was at Beautiful World and he handed me that Afro Rican 12", I thought I would continue this theme. Geting High with Hyman

So this record is a Command piece and as a collector you see joints like this all the time, except this time Dick Hyman killed it. The track is a funky psychedelic mooged out version of  James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose" and has become a DvC B-boy (the B-boy crew I roll with) anthem. I am always looking for an undiscovered funk gem to separate me from other cats who dj for B-boys and B-girls and this has always proven to be one. Enjoy!

Just Dub It

Easily the biggest return on investment from my Tequila Sunrise fifty cent spree, here's a track from the Face It 12" by Master C & J. This minimal groove was the first release on the short-lived Chicago house label State Street Records. Also, my first vinyl rip done on my own equipment, so please comment if you notice any glaring quality issues.

Fred Wesley - House Party (DJ Apt One Edit)

I randomly gripped up the 45 of House Party some time ago and it just recently came to the top of the "To Rip" pile. I know there's a 12" of this out there with a "Full Length" version on it, presumably the one that got some run at the Loft, but I decided to edit it up for my own purposes, complete with a period appropriate drum pattern and a period appropriate drum break that I laced up.

The Horizon Plate #1

Between the excellent cover art and the confident "buy this record" on the label, I knew the 12" was worth my dollar before I even listened to it (yes, this one actually cost a buck!). This diligently assembled mix from the early 80's reassures my belief that I am a disco fan. There is no question that I love the music, but can I truly say that I love the genre when revisionism plays a large role in my tastes? Thanks to this mix, the answer is in fact yes. Prior to hearing "The Horizon Plate," I always questioned my relationship with music that I am constantly butchering in Ableton. I mean, I often prefer recent edits over originals and classic disco djs played plenty of cringe worthy tracks to me. Fortunately, William Eager selected and mixed a batch of tracks in the early 80's with the same spirit I have in 2008. This is a missing link between disco fans like me and the disco era. I don't have a complete list of the source material, but there is a start below. Please comment if you can identify any of the other tracks.

Incomplete tracklist:
ESG - UFO sample
Sharon Brown - I Specialize In Love
Sky - Let's Celebrate
NYC Peech boys - Don't Make Me Wait
Chaz Jankel - Glad To Know You

If You Truly Love Me

Only In The Dark f/ Lisette Melendez - If You Truly Love Me (Club Kryptonite Mix) | Zshare | YSI | 320 kbps

I ripped this record like two months ago and entirely forgot about it because I didn't label it right and both the name of the crew and the name of the song are entirely generic. Awesome latin house from 1990 with Lisette Melendez on vocals. Breaks down into cheesy-but-aight pop-rap half way through, then picks up again.

You might know Lisette because of her freestyle hit "Together Forever." Dudes seem to be playing that track a lot these days because it has the "Sing Sing" break in it and yeah you know how that goes.

60 Minutes of Fear

At last, RVNG's newest release is here to rescue you from a musical rut! I imagine if you frequent this blog, you are a fan of dance music history. I've certainly spent the last six years exploring everything from funk to mnml. As my Expedits can tell you, things have been going well too. After all of this time collecting dusty old 12"s with dub mixes that sound cool until the vocal/sax/synth/etc comes in and ruins it, I need a break. I need to hear "songs" instead of "tracks", songs with distorted guitars and big choruses - punk songs.

Fortunately, Optimo's JD Twitch recently released his "60 Minutes of Fear" mix and "10 Inches of Fear" edits. The mix is an eclectic blend of punk spanning 3 decades, featuring Big Black, Crass, The Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Black Flag, The Minutemen, The Pop Group and more. It's a refreshing change from my typical diet of drum machines and computer music. Now I'm having fun nodding in agreement with Flipper and discovering The Fatal Microbes. Twitch also took it the extra mile by digging up some old Crass records releases, getting permission from the bands and doing a 10" of DJ friendly re-edits. Now we can get crusty in the club.

Thank you for the reminder Twitch!

Order JD Twitch's 60 Minutes of Fear CD & 10 Inches of Fear 10" here. It's definitely a good deal considering you get a fully packaged mix cd & 10".

Bonnie And Clyde (DJ Apt One Edit)

Back in the day, Burnso and I did a 4x4 live mix where we put the "Sucker MC" drums over Bonnie and Clyde. I finally got around to making this a formal edit. I kept it very loose so that it retains the live feel of the original, where there is almost no drumming to speak of, so the guitar and vocals meander all over. Basically the idea was to create an edit which just sounded like there were a few additional live musicians in the room, albeit percussionists.

Hot Stuff

Another gem from from Tequila Sunrise's 50 cent sale. Time for a confession: I hate string sections in disco music. Most string-laden disco music is garbage to me, but this track is a rare exception. Dollar Bin Jammers, Make RCMP Yours

Here's a formal introduction to the newest offshoot of the Philadelphyinz/Dollar Bin Jams family: RCMP.

RCMP is the brainchild of Relative Q (who you may remember from DBJ guest Mix Number 1) and me, DJ Apt One. It's a strictly classic Eurodance project.

More details emerge by the day, but I've just received word that there is a very good chance that RCMP will be on vinyl some time in 2009. Yay!

There will be free music for you at some point, no doubt, but in the meantime, go and listen to RCMP at myspace.com/rcmpmusic and make RCMP yours.

The Acid That Ate New York

Here's some great early acid from my own pile of Tequila Sunrise fifty cent scores. What caused me to pick it up in the first place was the fact that it was mistakenly filed inside a sleeve for Inner City's "Good Life" (which I found for real a couple minutes later, cha-ching!). Also, note the difference between my spelling of "acid" and that from the label pictured above (from Discogs). This is because the copy I grabbed is actually a House Nation Records white label test pressing with the track information rubber-stamped on, so I'm guessing it never even had a sleeve of its own to begin with.

Exclusive Sharegroove Edit

Brooklyn's Sharegroove, aka DJs Duckcomb & Steve Shakewell, are already known for their "sounds of serious fun" as djs. It seems like their edits are also informed by the same ethos - just listen to this Double Exposure track they recently gave me. Duckcomb patiently builds the groove by emphasizing some soulful vocal loops, warm keys and funky guitar. Eventually, he really lets the vocal and horn sections loose for maximum dancefloor enjoyment. Try this one out in your disco sets and see! As always, feedback is welcome...

Silk City this Wednesday + Confusion

This Wednesday I'm playing with The Model, Sgt. Sass & Joe Lentini at Silk City. Many genres will be represented, worshiped, combined, desecrated, warped, rebuilt and shot into the core of the earth.

I'm not sure what any of this has to do with New Order or Arthur Baker, other than that Johnny from The Model probably loves New Order and Joe Lentini may worship Arthur Baker. Anyway, Arthur Baker has done numerous remixes of New Order's "Confusion", but my favorite is the 12" mix from 1983. Also, the video is a must see for any fan of dance music. Arthur Baker with reel to reels, Jellybean Benitez at the Funhouse, and early 80's NYC club kids!

Also, I wish our visitors left comments more frequently. We love to hear from you!

New Peoples Potential Unlimited Release

Here's a strange track I first heard on Deep Sang's recent DURKL Promo Mix. Apparently Crunch was a New Orleans based solo artist from the early 80's. Somehow People's Potential Unlimited Records found these tracks and blessed the world with a reissue. Hats off to them for discovering such an awesome obscurity. "Funky Beat" reminds me of Gary Davis & His Professor's "The Professor Here," though Crunch is far more raw. My online research didn't yield any results, so here's what the label has to say about it:

"Get ready for an analog ride. These 80s multi-tracks are all we have left from creative mind, CRUNCH. Hurricane Katrina wiped out the home studio and master recordings. Now back from the bayou, every struggling sound, tape flutter, and disco hiss are re-released on vinyl, and sounding extra dirty. Only available on Peoples Potential Unlimited Records. Originally released on Style Records (1982)."

If you like what you hear, be sure to pick up a copy here.
