DJ Apt One - Best of Philly Disco

I just did a mix for Emynd and Bo Bliz's "1st and 15th" mixseries on Crossfadedbacon.com. It's the "Best of Philly Disco." Every song meets one of the following qualifications-
1. Made by a Philly-born/bred artist
2. Made by an artist on a Philly record label
3. Written/Arranged/Composed someone strongly associated with the Philly sound
4. Played by a Philly label’s house band
Tracklist:

1. People’s Choice – Do It Any Way You Wanna (7”) – TSOP, 1975
2. Sister Sledge – Lost In Music (12” Remix) – Atlantic, 1984
3. Bell & James – Livin It Up (Friday Night) (FitForUse Edit) – A&M, 1979 / White
4. McFadden & Whitehead – Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now – Phila Int’l, 1978
5. McFadden & Whitehead – Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now (Phillies Version) – Phila Int’l, 1981
6. McFadden & Whitehead f/ The Liberty Bells – Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now (Eagles Version) – Phila Int’l, 1981
7. Montana Sextet - Heavy Vibes (Club Mix) – Virgin, 1982
8. MFSB – Love Is The Message (Mr K. Special Edit) – TD, 198?
9. First Choice – Let No Man Put Asunder (Shep Pettibone Mix) – Salsoul,1983
10. Loleatta Halloway – Love Sensation (Shep Pettibone Mix) – Salsoul, 1983
11. Evelyn King – I Can’t Take It – RCA Victor, 1981
12. Dexter Wansel – It’s Been Cool (12” Version) – Phila. Int’l, 1979
13. Direct Current – Everybody Here Must Party – TEC, 1979
14. Q- The Voice of Q – Philly World, 1982
15. Pieces of A Dream – Mt. Airy Groove (Instrumental) – Elektra, 1982
16. Frankie Smith – Double Dutch Bus – WMOT, 1980
17. Broad Street Band f/ Bruce Grey – Work Your Body – Tempre, 1984
18. Archie Bell – Any Time Is Right (DJ Apt One Edit) – Beckett, 1981 / White
19. William DeVaughn – Be Thankful For What You’ve Got (Disco Version) – WMOT, 1980

Obviously, there are some records that didn't make the cut, and for some artists I deliberately used more obscure cuts (see: Dexter Wansel) to keep things interesting. All in all though, a fun listen and a great opportunity to dig out a few sleeper cuts in my record collection that I don't use much.

Rod - Shake It Up (DJ Apt One Remix)

I have a whole grip of classic edits and remixes that I've been sitting on, I figure it's time to let some of them out into the light.

Here's my take on a classic Prelude cut.

DJ Apt One - Best of My Love (Live Valentine's MiniMix)

We’ve getting geared up for the big Philadelphyinz Valentine’s Day blowout at Medusa Lounge on Feburary 14th with some special goodies.

This is a twenty minute live set I threw together for Emynd and JHN RDN's Fight Club night last month. I was searching for a theme to tie the set together and if you look at the tracklist below, you can probably figure out what it is.

As luck would have it, the idea struck me not all that long before Valentine's Day, so I recorded the set live. It's loose like you'd expect a 20-minute, 14 song live set to be - the mixing is pretty fast and furious. But hey, love (like this mix) isn't always perfect.

Tracklist:

Chris Farley and Paul McCartney - The Love You Make (Intro)
The Emotions - Best of My Love
Jody Watley - I Want Your Love (Danny Krivit Edit)
MFSB - Love Is The Message (Larry Levan Remix)
Kanye West - Love Lockdown (Cousin Cole Remix)
Jomanda - Got a Love For You (Hurley's House Remix)
Robin S - Show Me Love
Haddaway - What Is Love (Club Mix)
The Kickdrums - Love Is A Drug
The Kickdrums - Love Is A Drug (DJ Apt One Pjanoo Remix)
Rob Threezy - Love To The World
Sally Shapiro - I Know You're My Love (Juan Maclean Remix)
Justin Timberlake f/ TI - My Love
Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do For Love (DZ Remix)

Imagination - Changes (DJ Apt One Remix)

2008 was all about the economy going in the toilet, the bol Obama winning the presidency and it was also the year the Phillies somehow managed to win the World Series.

What will 2009 bring? I dunno but it's gonna be some whole other shit.

Changes doggie. Changes.

Zilla Rocca - Nada (DJ Apt One Remix)

I think this track will go over quite well with the DBJ family. It's a rap remix, yes, but it's got a serious classic disco twist to it with rolling pianos, muted guitar and some great vocals on the bridge. And as I'm sure you nerds are well aware, rap came from disco.

Read a review of the track and grab an exclusive download of the track at 33jones.com.

Fred Wesley - House Party (DJ Apt One Edit)

I randomly gripped up the 45 of House Party some time ago and it just recently came to the top of the "To Rip" pile. I know there's a 12" of this out there with a "Full Length" version on it, presumably the one that got some run at the Loft, but I decided to edit it up for my own purposes, complete with a period appropriate drum pattern and a period appropriate drum break that I laced up.

Make sure to drop this at your next house party, because, as the song says, you might have gone to the movies, but it's hard to afford the fare.

Bonnie And Clyde (DJ Apt One Edit)

Back in the day, Burnso and I did a 4x4 live mix where we put the "Sucker MC" drums over Bonnie and Clyde. I finally got around to making this a formal edit. I kept it very loose so that it retains the live feel of the original, where there is almost no drumming to speak of, so the guitar and vocals meander all over. Basically the idea was to create an edit which just sounded like there were a few additional live musicians in the room, albeit percussionists.

RFTW - Oh Sheila (DJ Apt One Remix)

OK here's my take on one of the Dollar Bin classics, complete with all the dirty ass vinyl crackles from the a capella.

You’ll notice it’s somewhat different than the version that appeared on the Bell Ringers mix, more synths for your ass.

Some fun samples in there for you nerds, too.

CLE-BIZA

Even though I'm from Pittsburgh, I got love for Cleveland. Specifically, I got love for bona fide rap champs like Ray Cash, Al Fatz, Bone Thugs and more.

My boys The Kickdrums are behind a lot of the music coming out of the rap scene (including the ridonkulous mixtape Clangin and Swangin by Ray Cash) as well as some joints by 50 Cent if memory serves. They're branching out on some next shit- and when they slid me their new pop song Love is a Drug, I worked it into a new mixtape Skinny and I are finishing up. The way I blended it up on the tape sounded so good to me that I had to get Tilla's source tracks so I could just flip the whole damn thing.

The result is a remix/blend type joint that flips chunks of Eric Prydz's Euro rave anthem Pjanoo.

Ramblings of a Lunatic

If you wanna hear me wax eloquent about records, record culture, record digging and the time I went digging with Peanut Butter Wolf, head over to Heavy In the Streets. Homie Sorce-1 interviewed me for a series called "Can You Dig It" where he interviews DJs from around the country. Most of the other DJs he has interviewed are cats that I have a great deal of respect for so I'm pretty flattered to be included in that group.

Oh, and while you're there (if you've got time to kill), he also interviewed all the members of the TV show The State.

Check the interview out HERE.

The Block Party Promo Mix

So Skinny and I are doing a new Wednesday weekly in Philly, chock full of dollar bin jams. It's an outdoor thing* on the Delaware River, styled as "Block Party Classics, Past, Present and Future." Classic disco, funk, rap, electro of course, but also the new classics and the future classics that we'll be reminiscing about years from now. We've got great guests lined up to start, including Dollar Bin Jammer Mike Tee, and more great guests throughout the summer.

Check out the rapid-fire promo mix we did, full of some dollar bin jams we all know and love:

Sweded

Today, the good folks over at Discobelle.net did a megapost on the dear Skinny Friedman and myself, representing what we consider the best of our original work of '07-'08.

Many of the tracks they put up over there have never appeared anywhere with dedicated hosting, and they didn't find permanent hosting there either. Since this is our little slice of the internet over here, we figured this would be a good place to mirror their post with some dedicated links that will memorialize these songs for ever and ever.

(Some of this stuff has appeared on DBJ before we started using dedicated hosting.)

Youngins in the thoroughfare

I made a quick intro edit of this great track the other night and I figured I'd share. It's a track that I've always avoided playing out because the regular intro is basically a drum fill and then BOOM (no John Madden).

Un autre niveau

Sebastien Tellier is, frankly, one of my favorite artists out there right now, and his new album is just straight fire. I wrote something about him over on Just Sayin recently, and, in lieu of directing you there, I'll just quote myself:
I don't want any girl I fancy anywhere near Sebastien Tellier because he's going to seduce them with mood disco and his swishy white pants and have unspeakably filthy sex with them. He's like one of those dudes who preys on foreign exchange students at the Sorbonne or something- he's got an accent, and even though he can't help it, that gives him an advantage.
Anyway, I heard one of his new tracks, L'amour et la Violence, recently, and like most of his material, it blew me away. I just had to remix it, and I'm quite proud of it,

And by the way, wait for the pianos.

Oh, and for those of you in New York this weekend, check Skinny and I out (and a secret special guest that DBJ readers will be thrilled to hear) at the Lucky Cat in Williamsburg on Friday night:

Philadelphyinz - Upstairs-Downstairs Mix

We did a mix for our pal Bushy, who runs the always excellent blog OurTalk, which is chock full of big room house and the occasional Joe Budden track. Long story short, Bushy's tech game is on the major fritz right now and he can't post it, so we're doing it here for now. However, I have to give dap to Bushy, because his blog is boss. Make sure you bookmark it.

G-Funk Era 2008

You know, as I sit down to post this it occurs to me that I've been dedicating a lot more time to making tracks and posting them here than I have been to actually putting up any Dollar Bin Jams. But hey- today's tracks are tomorrow's dollar bin finds, right? (Calling all label managers).

Today's special is a nice lil' spin on west coast gangsta synth work- anybody who recognizes any of the samples gets a gold star (tip- the synths are all original).

And to tip my cap to the original and stated purpose of this fine outpost in the inhospitable desert of the internet- here's the super duper OG g-funk track, the one that really started it all.
