Billy Who?

I discovered this cut on a Garage Classics 12" &  joined the ranks of listeners who will forever be grateful to that bootlegger for reissuing such amazing music. Not much is know about Billy & his friends, other than that they recoded this laid back disco tune and one other single. Thanks bootlegger and thanks Billy!

DJ Apt One - Happy Birthday Larry Levan

This is a live mix I made for Disco Bits - a tribute to the great Larry Levan they asked me to put together for his birthday. LL had a unique way of DJing, and I'm not trying to emulate him here or trying to play the "Best Of" the Garage. Just some rad Garage Classics in tribute to a rad dude. Enjoy.

Fred Wesley - House Party (DJ Apt One Edit)

I randomly gripped up the 45 of House Party some time ago and it just recently came to the top of the "To Rip" pile. I know there's a 12" of this out there with a "Full Length" version on it, presumably the one that got some run at the Loft, but I decided to edit it up for my own purposes, complete with a period appropriate drum pattern and a period appropriate drum break that I laced up.

Make sure to drop this at your next house party, because, as the song says, you might have gone to the movies, but it's hard to afford the fare.

More than just the rent

Gwen "The First Lady of the Paradise Garage" Guthrie got less credit than she deserved. She sang with Aretha, Madonna and Stevie. She wrote songs for Ben E. King, Roberta Flack and Gary Glitter. She kicked it with Larry Levan. Can't Love You Tonight is one of the first songs about AIDS. But she's best known for Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent, which isn't a bad thing, but it's not even close to a decent representation of her awesomeness.

I'm posting her first single, It Could Have Been You, an ill Sly and Robbie joint, it's mixed by Larry Levan. It came out first on Island later re-released on some of those 4th and Broadway electro comps.
