Our good friend Cousin Cole is a man short in stature but long on taste. I have been spending the morning in the studio feeling GREAT while floating on the sounds of his new mix "Slumberland." He implies it's a mix to provide pleasant ambiance for dozing, but I think any time asleep is time wasted if this is on. Well done Cole.
The Big Ship - Brian Eno
Your Silent Face - New Order
Navigation (CC Edit) - OMD
Wavelength - Van Morrison
A Little Lost (CC Edit) - Arthur Russell
Just For You - Peter Green
She's Lost Control - Grace Jones
Schizophrenia - Sonic Youth
I Hear a Darkness (Acid Pauli Remix) - Johnny Cash

If you like this, you should really dig into some of Cole's catalog. He has been on top of the "tasteful edit" game for a very long time and he basically never puts out anything that isn't worth a few spins!
Good thing Steve and Sergio hit record at Go Bang! in March, because I was really happy with how my set went. Listen to the mix below for 98 minutes of good grooves, and be sure to check out Go Bang! in April if you're in SF - DJ Apt One will be making his debut!

It's a grey day in Philadelphia. Perfect weather for the version of Ain't No Sunshine I found last week, by the early 70s Detroit guitarist Eddy Senay. It's a tough call, but this might be my favorite cover. Listen to the original and some of my other favorites below. What's yours?
So after listening to Del drop like nine zillion sampled-to-death Philly studio a capellas at the CaveCast live podcast, Shawn Ryan and I got to emailing our favorite flips of First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder" back and forth. This isn't the canon of First Choice flips, just our favorites.
To start, here's the seminal Shep Pettibone version at the root of this "tree" so to speak -
Keeping it close to Philly, Shawn brought up this jam by Vaggio (yeah, Vaggio, I know) on Josh Wink's Ovum
This Ja Ru version is something I came across on Juno the other day - really top shelf mellow ambiance.
Of course, there's the amazing Butch flip which keeps a lot of the vogue energy of the Shep Pettibone and Frankie Knuckles mixes.
Speaking of 80s vogue, there's this Nicholas track, which basically flips half of Larry Levan's playlist at once - from MFSB to the the house preacher.
A couple weeks ago, the fourth installment of the CaveCast was recorded at the Art Alliance in Philadelphia. It featured Philly's own breakbeat wizard, Tripledouble, discussing the history and his own take on breaks. Plus Tripledouble made a special AEIOU warmup mix for the podcast. Check out the mix and podcast below, and come out on Wednesday for CaveCast 005: Foundations of the PhilaDELphia Groove: The Early Perspective with Del waxing poetic on Philly soul and disco.
Philadelphia's Nitewax (aka DJ Bruce) is released his debut single today! That Club Track features excellent vocals by Detroit's Tunde Olaniran and That Time at Le Baron is a homage to Lil Louis. Grab the files below!
This is a cover of Space's "Magic Fly" that was apparently recorded and rushed to the American market before Space's version could be distributed. I think good space disco tracks are rare, but both versions of "Magic Fly" fit the bill.
This Friday, after The Magic Message with Justin Strauss, we're hosting the Philadelphia debut of Marvin & Guy, the black belt disco choppers from parts unknown, with releases on the excellent Let's Get Lost edit series and NYC's On The Prowl. Check out some tunes & grab a couple free downloads below. Get more info from the following links & check my twitter on Friday for the location.
I have an original track on a new compilation from LA's PYT Records. The compilation features some slo-mo and laid back disco cuts from some of my favorites in the game like Venice Beach and Solidisco.
I'm really excited to get this new record out there, I have been sitting on it and playing it for a while. It was originally intended to be a part of my full-length record I am working on, but it just didn't seem to fit.
It features a couple samples you might recognize (RIP Donald Byrd), but the main groove is just me ripping it on my bass guitar. Laid back, funky and free!
The whole compilation is free and available at PYT's soundcloud.
You can hear and download my tune below!
