DJ Apt One Live Sets From Pittsburgh, Seattle, SF

Happy to be able to share a live recording of my super late, super deep, super fun set at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh a few months back. This was a truly great and amazing party and I played lots of new Michael The Lion material and old RCMP material.

You may have read that this is one of the country's best and most unique parties (it's in a bath-house). And that is not an incorrect assessment.

Additionally, there are other live recordings from my recent tour dates in Seattle (Jack at The Eagle) and San Francisco (DBJ family's GoBang at The Stud) and a mixtape by Reed Streets I contributed to up on my Soundcloud.

Aracari

DC duo Chris Burns & Gavin Holland are switching things up a bit. They've dropped the Party Bros moniker in favor of Mysteries Of The Mind (which is also their vinyl imprint.). I'd say it's a more fitting name for their strain of spacious & dreamy sounds. Their newest EP is fantastic, even surpassing their solid 2012 debut 12". I'm going to bump this thing non-stop on summer nights and mornings, and when we finally have hover cars, I'm going to bump it in that too! Check out the lead single, Aracari, below, along with snippets of the entire 12". Don't sleep on the EP preview - there's a remarkable variety of different sounds & vibes packed into those 5 tracks! Balearic, new age, r&b, dancehall... oh hell yes! Order the 12" directly from Mysteries of The Mind for only $8 here.

Also, these guys are great copy writers...

Dreamlike textures and hypnotic percussion are the focus of “Aracari,” an enchanting A-Side featuring a vocalist who simply goes by... Jane. M.O.T.M.’s swirling delays, endangered bird calls and a resilient bassline instantly transport the atmosphere of your local nightclub or hiking trail. Burns’s Montreal/Bombay connection, Greg Pidcock of Hot Creations, fruitfully delivers a thumping club interpretation that will surely make the rounds of outdoor gatherings around the globe in 2014.

Turning towards the murkier depths of sexual fantasy and personal misery, the Aracari B-Side delivers 3 productions bound only by a common tempo range . Taking a cue from late night urban radio, “Soft Focus” delivers a shimmering result that highlights advances in modern digital production techniques. Guitarist Kevin Bayly (of Brett) and Baltimore songwriter Symbol both pitch in on this original take of contemporary Rhythm and Blues music. Chugging along with a punch-drunk drum track, “Sloppy Seconds” heaves with nervous energy and intolerant melodic flashes. “Partial Victory,” a late-night dancehall experiment in the pan-global corporate struggle, finishes off the B-side with a bubbly call to arms.

Just Let Go

Those of you who check DBJ regularly know that we've been following The SyntheTigers since their inception, from their days of disco edits to their first original tracks. Hell, Superprince even contributed a remix to their first release! I think the 'Tigers have an impressive body of work, but they somehow took it to a whole new level with Just Let Go. Maybe it's the addictive Baby Wants To Ride-esque synth, maybe it's Tobirus Mozelle's amazing vocals, or maybe it's the insane remixes from the legendary Mr. V. I'm thinking it's all of the above and more! The SyntheTigers original version is their best work yet, and Mr. V delivers the goods with his remixes.

Grab a free download of Mr. V's remix and listen to samples of the entire release below. It's available now on Traxsource and soon on Juno Download.

Pro-tip: My favorites are the original mix and Mr. V's Broken-Down Main Mix.

Free download alert!

Robert Lux & Todd Edwards Remixes

This is a big record for me for a few reasons - first, it is the debut of my new alter-ego "Michael The Lion," who you will be hearing a lot more from in the near future. Second, it's a really great record by a great duo - Robert Lux and Todd Edwards. Third, it is an absolutely devastating remix lineup - Pat Lok and Pittsburgh Track Authority are both shooting stars in their respective lanes. It doesn't get much better!

The original and the Pat Lok remixes are both free - take a listen, buy a copy and support independent music!

You can buy them at brick-and-mortar locations in Philadelphia (and at TTL's flagship in NYC).

Many thanks for your support!  Later this week I will be telling you about another YR release and some West Coast shows I will be playing this weekend!

The Music Of His Dance

DBJ homie, Synthetiger & Go Banger Sergio let me know about an interesting compilation that features the 'Tigers. Friends With Benefits Records & Big Joy put together a  collection of poet & filmmaker James Broughton's work paired with productions by Horse Meat Disco's Severino, The Synthetigers & more. In their words:

The compilation aims to renew interest in James Broughton’s legacy of freedom, acceptance, and following your own weird by sampling his spoken word poetry in the context of modern deep house.

Check out sample of the compilation below. Warning: some of James' words are NSFW.

As you all well know, I've made quite my share of edits in my day, and I can say pretty confidently that the dude Luxxury is by far the most impressive disco editor in the game the last year or so. It's not even close. Here are a few of my favorites.
