I've Seen That Face Before

I watched Roman Polanski's Frantic last night, and I had totally forgotten about this song being in it. Not a perfect film, but the club scene where Harrison Ford and Emmanuelle Seigner dance to this is exquisite. You can see it written all over his face, how he's torn between his desire for this exotic, sensual creature and the desperation to find his kidnapped wife, and this conflict results in some seriously awkward dancing, which doesn't at all come off as merely slapstick physical comedy but real, authentic bewilderment.

Also, this is the LP version; the single version is about a minute longer. Anyone have that?

I'm In Love

I wanted to share this Joey Negro edit of an Italian disco rarity, that is often mistaken for a lost Chic track by anyone that hears it. Writer and producer Marty Celay is the man behind the Cela alias and unfortunately, I could not track down a credit for whoever the sultry lady/ladies is/are behind the lush vocals. Marty and friends really nail down that distinct American disco sound arguably perfected by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.

That all said, Joey Negro really made this good track into something stellar by reworking the intro; slightly extending it and making it instrumental; the first minute or so of the original features some questionable call & response vocals that sound downright annoying when compared with the edit posted here.

Let's see if you guys can help me crack this one. Above is a scan of the label and the track is the first one off of side A. Anyone know?

Caught in Luv

Diva house! This is the first record to feature the vocal talents of Dawn Tallman, and while it doesn't really go anywhere over the course of eight minutes, it definitely knocks.

OCD tendencies...

This post turned out to be much more of a hassle than I thought. So I picked up this MCA double 12" promo yesterday. I checked online and found a CD rip of my favorite track, the Mateo & Matos Dub, to post. The file, which came from an official Femi compilation, was faster than the 12" version and had some vocals in it. My rip was 9:10, just like the label said it would be (and I ripped it on 33 with the pitch set to zero), but it was only 115 bpm and sounded odd compared to the 126 bpm cd rip and the vocal version of the same mix. At this point I was pretty annoyed so I tried it on 45 to check, but that sounded totally crazy. So I ripped it at +8 and now it sounds just like Mateo & Matos' other versions. I'll chalk it up to a pain in the ass pressing error. I better play this a lot at Apothecary.

Also, if you're in the Philadelphia area, Femi's playing at World Cafe Live in June.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine

I am taking a break from semi-obscure dancefloor material to share what I like to call a 'no brainer'. This is one of my favorite tunes of all time, reminding me of waking up on a hot summer Sunday morning, making some iced coffee and sitting outside until it's time to do something productive (read: Monday). Today is the first spot of sunshine we have had in Philadelphia in about five days and Metropolis is tonight. Roy sets the perfect mood for a potentially perfect day; even if I am sitting in my office until 5.

L.O.V.E. Is What You Need

Thanks to my partner in crime Erin Diamond Girl for turning me on to this one. Lifelike makes good use of the Unique classic "What I Got Is What You Need" and creates a feel-good summer tune that works in nearly every way you want it to. Not too much happens, but the sample is enough to put smiles on faces. Took me a while to track down a copy of the My Precious Diamond EP, which is where this track originally appears.

Stay Free

This is, by far, my favorite Ashford and Simpson tune. Originally released as a B-side to the French pressing of the "Found a Cure" promo 12", this track hits me in the gut about 30 times harder than the better known A-Side. Pay close attention to the absolutely sublime string and horn arrangements from John Davis of Monster Orchestra fame and the perfect mixdown from Nick Simpson, himself. It's tracks like this that will always have me crawling back to the late 1970's for inspiration and a huge smile. Nothing but feel good vibes for five and a half minutes.

Get Money

Don't look any further - Cropsy the Manhattan Monster is back. Here is a nice post for some of you heads trying to get up on some Hip-hop and R&B bangers. First "Get Money," the Junior M.A.F.I.A. Party Classic followed by the just as popular "Get Money Remix." Don't Sleep on the remix, it was once common law to mix them into each other at any proper gig I did between 97 and 2002. To add some spice to this post I decided to included the original sample sources for the Junior M.A.F.I.A. tracks which are mad dope. Hope you Enjoy!
