BOOM BOOM in BK

This Chinese New Year Chris Rogy is bringing in the Dragon with a boom...
Those of you that know me, know I had a long stint in Southeast Asia. In that time, the sounds of 60s and 70s funk and soul grew on me fondly and I began to collect some of those sweet digs. In fact, way back when, in April of 2010, I posted on DBJ just before moving from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. In that post, I referenced Peter Doolan's Monrakplengthai blog. What you don't know, is when I contacted Peter - who I thought was in Boston at the time - I discovered he lived in my neighborhood in Bangkok, good ol' Ratchada Soi 3!
Shortly after, Peter and I got together and went digging for records in Chinatown before my flee. I gotta say, it was a very fruitful experience. With his knowledge of labels and producers we were able to come out with some serious dollar bin jams, only every jam there was a dollar, 'cause that's what a record costs.
Now, nearly 2 years later, Peter and I both live in Brooklyn and we've teamed up again, this time with vinyl connoisseur, Thai Beat/Khmer Psyche Rock enthusiast, Michael Martin (who recently came to visit me in Cambodia) to bring one of the most original soul nights Brooklyn's seen in a long while: BOOM BOOM.
- Chris Rogy
Boom Boom will premier at the Veronica People's Club in Brooklyn this Monday! For more info, check out the FB event here.

Philly Int'l Re-Edits Release

This Friday, I am very proud to present to the world the Philly International Records 40th Anniversary Re-Edits and Remixes compilation. It's a comp available only in Europe, part of a series of 14 CDs of retrospective and new material from one of Philly's great cultural institutions.

I have a remix of one of my favorite songs of all time, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "Wake Up Everybody" on this comp, and it is a top 10 selling R&B record on Amazon UK. Harmless Records, BBC and Philly International were great to ask me to participate in this project and I'm very glad that as the only participant in the remix project from Philadelphia, I have the privilege of presenting it to you. This is the only place in North America you can get this CD (provided all the international shipping comes in on time!).

Furthermore, I am so pleased that we have Del, a great DJ and a great lover of Philly Disco with us to guest, and this also marks the grand debut of the newest resident at The Ball, DJ BRUCE!! We're gonna show you why disco and house music are the best to sweat to!

If you are in the Philly area, please drop by!

New Matpat 12"

Philadelphia's Matpat is celebrating his new release on London's Strobelight Honey by giving away a free download of his new George Benson rework. The originals on the 12", as well as the freebie, are all funky house cuts with strong drums & artfully flipped samples. The vinyl also features a remix by LA's NYCPARTYINFO. For some insight into Matpat's influences (and for some free music), checkout his Househeads blog series.

Dim The Lights

For Ruxbin's Mixedtape Exchange this year, I thought I'd make some sense of some of my vintage house 12"s. I included a couple recent cuts, but the majority of the soaring synths & warm basslines are from late 80s to mid 90s. 100% vinyl, featuring tracks from Cajual, Nu Groove, Shelter, Henry Street, Planet E, TBD Sounds & more!

El Chiflado

Here's a little Peruvian gem Platurn recently unearthed...

One of the scores down in Lima over the holidays (was pretty beat -- cleaned it up as best as possible). Don't know anything about its origins but Chic is spelled Chick and it's obviously a cover albeit the music is very close to the original, sens the lazy drawl of the female vocals which is all kinds of awesome.

Despite its overpopularity, i've always been a fan of this song and I love hearing alternates done in other countries (put a Cantonese? one on the OZ mix from last year -- check 47:50 right here.

You find these types of disco covers quite frequently when abroad and I dig 'em every time. Tells you a lot about the quality/equipment that specific countries adhered to at the time and it's always interesting to trip off of which songs they chose to cover (always great when it's something super random that was never even popular in the states).

More to come including a mini mix soon! Stay tuned and enjoy.

Respect to Snikars

This mix by L.I.E.S. mastermind Ron Morelli has been on heavy rotation for the past few months, so I thought I'd share. It was recorded for the Noise In My Head radio show & most of the records were purchased at Snikars Records in Stockholm. I gotta book a flight to Sweden soon!

Respect to Snikars-Ron Morelli mix for Noise in My Head, Australia by L.I.E.S.
