New York This Weekend + DIN DAA DAA

It's a very New York weekend for Skinny and me.

Tonight we're playing with Fools Gold family (Treasure Fingers and Catchdubs) at Europa in BK, and then tomorrow with Detroit's Frankie Bank$ at Arrow in the LES.

Come holler!

The "Ones" According to Nas

There seems to be a reoccurring theme in a lot of songs from Nas and that is to use the word "One" somewhere in the title. I'm going to be posting a series of the "Ones" from Nas within my Nas series, haha jeez I'm a loser.

The Symphony

I decided to drop some knowledge for those who need a quick lesson on some Hip-Hop ish. When I saw Shawn Ryan post the "Affirmative Action Remix," my first thought was Juice Crew's "Symphony." This possibly may be the best posse cut ever. It was the first Hip-Hop track to make the Otis Redding sample "Hard To Handle" popular. In addition, I also would like to drop my favorite version of "Affirmative Action" that I used to cut up everyday during blunted freestyle sessions. Enjoy and peep the OG Juice crew video!

I just touched grounds down in Philly...

Everytime I bike through crazy traffic on Walnut Street or Chestnut Street, the Affirmative Action Remix inexplicably pops into my head. EVERYTIME. I think the piano riff gets me pumped for riding between moving cars and running lights. You might actually remember The Firm from Phone Tap though. Big MTV hit back in the day. I used to look forward to the AWESOME video redeeming all of the shitty videos that preceded it.

ESL Promo Mix

Here is a mix I put together for the 18th Street Lounge in D.C. The groovy track selection escorts you though a variety of genres - funk, jazz, afro-beat, boogaloo, old school dancehall and spacey abstract soundscapes are what you can expect to hear. Think antique couches and pricey rum & cokes, then hit play. Enjoy!

Animal Collective Edit

Not a dollar bin jam but a jam nontheless but one that needed a little ableton magic and a backbeat. Produced with love in Shawn Ryan's kitchen.

A Day Like No Other

This is a rare freestyle session off of the 2xLP Tags of Time Version 1.0 compilation on Mary Joy recordings out of Japan using the original instrumentals from the Siah and Yeshua EP. I think that's all the info I'd like to give here, if you know what this is cool, if not...act like you know.

Bomb the Bass

My jam from back in the day. I found this record when I was 12 for a dollar and have seen many more since. A true dollar bin jam. Enjoy! (in a vocoder voice)

You Can't Hide

A straight up classic for your Valentine's Day. Files of the vocal 12" version aren't too difficult to find, but the instrumental is more of a challenge. I finally found a copy of the 12" at Tequila Sunrise last summer and ripped the elusive side. Though I enjoy David's vocals on the track, I think the instrumental has it's place too.

Also, if you have a couple minutes, here's Greg Wilson doing some tricks with it on TV in '83:

Funky Freshness

"L E O" Part One and Part Two are both ridicules. They're explained on Discogs as New York funk with an Afican percussive bent. Umm, sounds right to me! This joint is pretty rare and let's say it didn't cost a dollar. Try to keep this on the low true Dollar Bin bloggers.

DJ Apt One - Best of My Love (Live Valentine's MiniMix)

We’ve getting geared up for the big Philadelphyinz Valentine’s Day blowout at Medusa Lounge on Feburary 14th with some special goodies.

This is a twenty minute live set I threw together for Emynd and JHN RDN's Fight Club night last month. I was searching for a theme to tie the set together and if you look at the tracklist below, you can probably figure out what it is.

As luck would have it, the idea struck me not all that long before Valentine's Day, so I recorded the set live. It's loose like you'd expect a 20-minute, 14 song live set to be - the mixing is pretty fast and furious. But hey, love (like this mix) isn't always perfect.

Chris Farley and Paul McCartney - The Love You Make (Intro)
The Emotions - Best of My Love
Jody Watley - I Want Your Love (Danny Krivit Edit)
MFSB - Love Is The Message (Larry Levan Remix)

Robotique Mixtape 2.0 : Winter Blues, Summer Muse

One of my New Year's resolutions was to release at least 6 mixes before 2010. It dawned on me that Sangria Beats is nearly a year old. That is twelve whole months with a lot of gigs and a ton of record purchases, yet devoid of any recordings.

That said, it's been a personally tumultuous year for me; the rug was yanked out from under my feet towards the end of 2008 and I was left sitting on the floor wondering what had happened. With a bit of reflection, I picked myself up, dusted off my pride and decided I needed to dive headfirst into DJing; not only playing out, but also putting more hours into the bedroom (insert snide dirty joke here).

Here is the product of several weeks of mixing, getting frustrated, deciding drum sounds did and didn't match, searching for records in the same key and most importantly trying to find a balance between records that get a huge response on the Robotique dancefloor and my own state of mind. Let's face it: successfully selecting records that reflect your own personality while entertaining others is the crux of this art; it's the final piece of the puzzle. The lesson that can be learned, but cannot be taught. Hopefully I was even a tiny bit as successful as I aspired to be!

This was recorded directly to CD on a bitterly cold night in one take using all vinyl records.

Raw Silk - Do It To The Music (Masters At Work Remix)
Chuck Love - Dream Deep
In Flagranti - In The Silver White Box
Wild Rumpus - Rock The Joint (Reverso 68 Remix)
Pete Shelley - Witness The Change

Grand High Priest - Mixdown
Johnny Hammond - Fantasy (Faze Action Special Disco Edit)
DD Sound - Burning Love (Edit)
Putsch 79 - Untitled
The Popular People's Front - Get Down Shep

It's a Fine Line - Woman (A Makhnovshchina Repossession)

Billy W. - Robotique Mixtape 2.0 | ZShare

Philadelphia area people are encouraged to join myself and Ryan T. aka Darklord this Friday night at the Robotique monthly. We have moved to a new venue with better sound, a friendly vibe and clean, functional bathrooms. The party starts at 10, it's free and now takes place at Kung Fu Necktie (1250 Front Street).

Last but not least, please join the Robotique Facebook Group for party announcements and special messages from yours truly.

Love, Is It On Your Side?

This is a dope 80's joint that has a lot of flavor and a cool hook. I like playing this record if I know I have a creative crowd that's feeling good. I heard this song playing at a event in Philly before and I was glad to see people grooving to it. Hope you enjoy!

Oh, and don't forget to check out Hurrah if your in Philly this Saturday. I will be there with Shawn Ryan and my arsenal of killer tracks. Don't sleep, I barely ever get down that way and have this much creative freedom to blast a dance-floor with!

Too Short

London DJ Iamxl flips one of my favorite Todd Shaw jams from back in the day into an acid-ish house banger. Actually this is kind of a mash with C-Pen's "Puffin Stuff" (thanks Get Weird Turn Pro comment section), but it works.

Tracks like "In Da Trunk" -- where Short raps his ass off for four minutes straight, no hook -- make a lot more sense for house refixes or for hip-house in general than the verse/hook/verse/hook rap songs that made up hip-house in its salad days. Makes a lot more sense for the builds and breaks that house music thrives on.

West Street Mob

Electric Boogie is my jam! I have been playing this record since I was about 16 and have loved every minute of it. B-boys go crazy for it, and why not - it's only the most awesome remix of Apache by the Incredible Bongo Band ever (Okay, Switch killed it too). Recently I heard Billy play it at The Barbary and people went nuts, so don't forget to drop this sleeper every once in a while. Enjoy!
