Cosmo Baker

If you read Dollar Bin Jams and you don't know who Cosmo Baker is, you should probably punch your own self in the nuts, and then take a little time to learn up about the man.

Philly born and bred, Cosmo is a crucial link in a long chain of talented DJs in Philly - he was raised up by the generation before him and helped raise the generation after, even though he moved to Brooklyn. Pretty much every DJ and club-goer in Philly, NYC and worldwide has a huge respect for Cos and I feel very fortunate to be in music game at the same time and place as the dude. He's also always down for a 4AM pretzel on Washington Ave, so I can't be mad.

OK enough with the puff-piece. I'm mentioning Cosmo because he just redesigned his always-excellent site, and now there are more reasons than ever to go there and soak up the insane record knowledge that always spills off the page. If you're down with DBJ you should most definitely be over there getting learned!

NickNack - Stolid (DJ Apt One Remix)

I'm really happy to be a part of NickNack's remix project for his Dearly Departed LP, and it's now out and available at the price of your choosing!

The roster of remixers for the project was great, including Bird Peterson, B.Cause, DJ Ayres, DJ DRM and more.

I'm really happy with how the song turned out - it's a disco groover with a very organic feel and a lot of swing to it. I recall playing it at Robotique in the spring and getting a lot of "wtf was that?" from people.

The record is available from Crowd Control records with a pay-what-you-wish type arrangement, you can pay nothing if you want, but please, give generously!

Electric Relaxation

DBJ homie Ed Blammo recently recorded a new mix and he wants you to have it. He also wants to pour mimosas down your throat every Sunday. Read on...
I started a new party this month at PYT in Philly. Every Sunday from Noon-4 come get some much needed Electric Relaxation. I recorded a short mix of some of the music I play for the Sunday brunch crowd. I'm hoping to record a few more of these on a semi-regular basis as the party continues. And yes, there are free mimosas every week, and yes, they are delicious.

Five Years of Philadelphyinz

This Saturday is the 5-Year Anniversary of Philadelphyinz. That's beyond an eternity as far as parties go.

It’s been a long strange trip! Long story short, it’s pretty amazing to wake up every morning and know that going to “work” means DJing, traveling to new and exciting places and making music in the studio. It’s all because of this party, and it’s all because of the people who have come to this party (and those that it spawned) over the years. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We'll be giving away a limited edition 5-Year Anniversary Mixtape, which is kinda funny, because today I remembered a quirky story about how this party came to be - a story in which an old mixtape I made is central... and then I found the mixtape. And I'mma post it.

But first, the details:

PHILADELPHYINZ 5-YEAR ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR

DJ APT ONE + SKINNY FRIEDMAN with
ED BLAMMO (BLAM CITY)
ELVIS SUAREZ (STRICTLY RHYTHM RECORDS)
JAY YO

Giveaways of a special 5-Year Anniversary mixtape

Hosted by Lexie -Free before 11, $5 After
Medusa Lounge, 27 S. 21st Street, Philadelphia

One night in November 2005, I walked into the Royal Tavern in South Philly to meet some friends, after polishing up a mixtape I was working on at home. The previous week I had played a Halloween show as Myron Cope Experience (an outfit I had with Burnso, who is featured on the most recent RCMP release) with Diplo and Plastic Little, that KT (not yet then of Broadzilla) had booked. I see Jayson (of PL) sitting at the bar chatting with Khyber booker Stacie George and I say hello. I didn't really know Stacie at the time or what she did for a living. Jayson and I cut it up about how Jules peed in an ice bucket in the green room. A propos of nothing, Stacie mentions that she's got a night she's trying to fill at the Khyber, Jayson says "this guy's a good DJ we played with him last week," I hand her the only finished copy of the mixtape I had just finished literally fifteen minutes earlier (which I was gonna give to my buddy Jai). A few days later I got a call back, fast forward five years, add Skinny Friedman, Medusa Lounge, Lexie, a record label, a bunch of touring and there you have it.

Anyway, here's the mix - called "The Food Money Mixtape." It's not really a representation of what I was playing in clubs at the time, but it's very representative of my tastes, has some pretty rare and cool records on it and it actually holds up to my standards pretty well. I found it this morning and gave it a listen or two and really enjoyed it. I won't give a tracklist (because I don't actually have one), but it's got some Eddy Senay, Nas, The Smiths, Whodini, Ohio Players, Biggie, Dexter Wansel, Cymande, Timmy Thomas, Raw Sex, Gwen McRae. I guess I haven't really changed that much over the years.

Enjoy!

Brotherhood

I just received my copy of the Honey Soundsystem's recent Brotherhood compilation in the mail today. Fans of vintage disco & house take note - this 13 track CD is loaded with excellent edits, originals & obscurities (a tape edit of Maurice from 88?!). So far my favorites are Filthy Luka's Missing You, Gaye Marvin's (of Secret Mixes & Fixes fame!) edit of Lost in Music & the Discodromo cut. Have a listen below. You can pick up the CD directly from the Honey Soundsystem here.

Honey Soundsystem presents: Brotherhood (V/A) by Honey Soundsystem HNYTRX

They were also kind enough to offer up this free download of a Patrick Cowley classic, made in honor of what would be his 60th birthday.

Native Underground

Native Underground: Till It Hurts - Play It Loud Dub by thewurst

Wurst has outdone itself once again with the new Native Underground EP. Here's the story...
Native Underground came together through Craigslist of all places. Veteran house producer Henry Maldonado was looking for a singer that channeled the likes of Chaz Jankel, Peter Brown, and even Wham-era George Michael to pair with his latest work, so he placed an ad online. The Brooklyn native had cut his teeth in the early 90s on Strictly Rhythm (as a member of House 2 House and Urban Rhythm), the late 90s and early 00s on MAW (as Rhythm Section), and more recently on UK disco stalwart Tirk, and on his own Speak label (as Son of Sound), and was looking to evolve his sound intoa distinctly pop direction. Simply enough, Javi answered the ad, Henry loved his voice, and the rest, well, the rest is the accompanying EP.
Available from Juno Download or Boomkat next week.
