More Jungle Fever "X-Rated"
This time it's a Nubian Crackers remix. The selection is from "Chocolate Bam Boo" Da Lost Tapes EP. Thee Mike B had posted other stuff off this EP, so I think it's pretty respectable. It would be cool if heads blended the two together. So Enjoy!

Flames in a Cave - Exclusive New Mix!
Here is what I would call the essential mix to represent my strangely eclectic taste, "Flames in a Cave". The mix's introduction I feel describes my approach to making it. Make sure you have your map and torch before entering, let me know if you actually make it to the end!

The Chakachas - Jungle Fever
Kids, don't play this one too loud when your parents are home.
I honestly don't remember whether I ripped this from my 7" copy or from the white label repress I have, but I'm guessing it's the latter because I know that the first drum hit of the 7" is burnt as hell from when I used to play this out back in the day.

And DBJ homies- come catch me and Skinny in NY tonight, or if you live in parts unknown- in Detroit, Pittsburgh or Morgantown, WV next week. More details here.
Conti Family
This family sounds sick. They are from Detroit and released this record on their own label. This selection is definitely the most useful on the LP the song is called "Little Bongo Boy". Enjoy this funky tune that's sure to make you groove. Come on boy, make those bongos roll!

Beat This
Dark dancefloor-ready synth jam from Night Moves. Yes, this is the same Night Moves of "Transdance" fame. Arthur Baker should take a stab at remixing this. Also, anyone hear similarities to "Set It Off" in the drums/weird repeating whistle sound? No? Maybe I'm crazy.

Interesting random nugget: Shirley Lites of "Heat You Up (Melt You Down)" fame plays live every other Thursday at Abi's Desert Lounge in West Philly. No, I'm not joking. Evidently she's old friends with "Abi", or whoever runs the place, so she uses it as a testing ground for new material and a way to rehearse live. Today she leaves for a tour of Japan.
After seeing her name on a poster taped to the outside of the bar, my friend Ryan and I did a little investigative questioning and found out that it was indeed that Shirley Lites. I returned with my copy of the "Heat You Up" 12" and asked her to sign it. "Finally we meet!", she wrote. She also commented that she never expected to see her record in the hands of young people in 2008. Next time, I will harass her for Larry Levan stories or unreleased tapes.
Many, many DBJ related gigs this weekend. Check out the Robotique, Hurrah, Philadelphyinz and Restless Leg Syndrome pages to make your holiday weekend plans.

Interview with Fucci and Brian Blackout by Chris Rogy:
Fucci and Brian Blackout are Excess Energy, a DJ duo and a party machine: currently holding down a second Saturday residence at Williamsburg's Macri Park. These scientists of sound throw down a frenetic eclectic blend of leftfield dance selections- with hefty chunks of classic house and funky disco, plus random jams and oddball favorites just to keep things interesting.
I know Brian's originally from West Virginia. How did the two of you meet?
F: I'm a native New Yorker (ahem) and I was doing residences at a few underground queer clubs when I met seasoned "phDJ" and edits extraordinaire Eugene Tambourine. When Brian had the happy accident of becoming downstairs neighbors with him Eugene introduced us, because "you're about the same age in DJ years" (we just turned five!). I invited Brian to guest at my Love Muscle party at Happy Ending, and we discovered our own unique 'Excess Energy': similar tastes and approaches to stylistic programming.
You both recorded a live show with East Village Radio. Can you tell us a little bit about the experience? Are there plans for a regular slot in the works?
F: We both had a great time on East Village Radio! I had guested on Bruce Tantum's EVR show Body Control, and Brian did a college radio show for a few years, so it was nice to get behind the mic again. We both love to talk, so it was fun to banter between our sets, and to air parts of our record collections that never make it to the clubs, like Blackout's favorite—shoegazer slow jams!As for regular shows, only time will tell, so look out for us...
Brian, what was it like sharing a stage with Girl Talk? Was it difficult to get him out to West Virginia? Explain the circumstances surrounding this for us.
B: Back when I started booking Girl Talk to come down to our parties in Morgantown, WV, I'd seen him in Pittsburgh (which is only an hour from Morgantown) playing at small shows. The first time was in an old video arcade. This was all before he released Night Ripper; he just sort of blew up after that. It was a little hard to believe, just because I'd gotten to see him play such tiny venues before. The biggest difference after his newfound notoriety was just how nuts people got when we booked him! It created this environment of insanity, but because these were mostly a bunch of underage college kids who had to pregame in their dorms beforehand, they got worn out pretty early with the intensity of his show, so my big challenge was to keep them out on the floor instead of heading to bed. Ultimately though, he's a really nice, down to earth guy and it always made booking him and communicating with him simple and straightforward. It also changed the atmosphere of our night—I was spinning there last weekend and kids were jumping up on stage and going nuts!
Any thoughts on the new Arthur Russell documentary?
B: It looks fascinating. Arthur was such an opaque person, it might be interesting to gain some insight into him, but then there's always the worry that it might spoil the mystery a little.
What is your favorite dollar bin dig?
B: I think I found Kenny Bee's "Dance All Night" for a dollar, now that's a jam.
F: Ooh, there are so many ...right now I am feeling 'Happiness is Dub Around the Bend' by Cuba Gooding.

Life's A Beach! / L.A. Sunshine
I leave for four days at the beach today. It's the first proper vacation my wife and I are taking this year. When I say 'proper vacation' I mean one where you go away some place, sit in the sun, don't answer your phone and don't have to 'be' anywhere. Visiting family or driving to see friends doesn't count.
What better way to kick things off than with a couple of gems, one new(ish), one old. Swedish production team Studio does their Scandinavian disco thing with a little help from Todd Terje on the aptly titled "Life's A Beach!".

The Rock Is Gonna Get You
Gordon's War released this record in 1979. It's fun to dance to & definitely a gem. Luckily I found a test press at a record show and only listened to it because it looked cool. When i heard it, I knew what the deal was. Good luck finding one. Enjoy!

WIHAWIHTY?
One of my favorite Bill Withers songs is "Who Is He and What Is He To You?" which has an unmistakably weird opening lick and an impossibly long name. I copped this LP by Creative Source a few months ago and just cracked it open this week and good god there is this fantastic 12-minute long version of said song with said impossibly long name.
Because I've been jockin it so hard the track has come up in a few e-mail conversations the last couple of days and I shortened the long-ass name to WIHAWIHTY, which is now the new hot internet acronym. You need to call out your woman for maybe getting a lil piece on the side via text message on your old clamshell T9 phone? Now you can do it in exactly ten characters.
After she stammers out a response, you can cut her loose on the spot with another useful funk and soul-inspired acronym: "GOMLW" (adding "YDLMA" if she needs an explanation).
And then you bounce on the entire conversation with "G2G, WIACM".

Hesitation
Solid Italo produced by Alexander Robotnick and originally issued on his label, Fuzz Dance, in 1984. This rip comes from an American 12" of the same name that compiles 4 of the label's tracks, which came out on Sire (always so forward thinking!) in 1985.

Ain't No Stoppin'
I don't know what else to say, this is just an awesome Philly record. McFadden and Whitehead, two of the most important forces in the Philadelphia International writing and production stable, put out this 12" on the heels of the success of their hit Ain't No Stoppin Us Now, which was kind of an anthem for the '80 Phillies.
Although the record is copyrighted 1981, I'd guess it hit the stores and radio in early fall, 1980, when the Eagles were on a run to their first Super Bowl and the Phillies won their first World Series in October. There's a lot of shit-talking on the Kansas City Royals, so that implies that the Phillies version hit the radio prior to the Series.
Each version is just a rework of the song with the names of coaches and players. The Eagles version is a lot better in my opinion, featuring the Liberty Bells on background vox, plus some E-A-G-L-E-S cheers at the end.
As far as I can tell, this is a tough record to come by- no mention of it on Discogs, nothing on Gemm, but this is just far too awesome a record to sit on the shelf. And with the National League pennant races coming up, and the Eagles in training camp- there's no better time to air it out.

Out To Get You
Trower expanded his mind in Procol Harum and then moved onto a prolific solo career, complete with funky oddball LP cuts.
Philly heads: Tonight, I will be doing a guest spot at the Excess monthly at Medusa Lounge. I packed up a bunch of house records I haven't played in ages, as well as some classic acid. Bring chemicals and hang out.
Before that I will be at the Sweet Jane Vintage Clothing and Records (1742 E.Passyunk Ave.) First Friday bash from 7-10, playing slow and sleazy tunes. I don't think I packed anything above 115 BPM. Refreshments (read: free booze) will be served and there's a dope photo show to boot. Get it in!
