WKDU 2017 Electronic Music Marathon

WKDU's Electronic Music Marathon returns this weekend! Universal Cave is up to bat on Friday from 9 to 10pm, Michael The Lion is up on Monday from 5 to 6pm, and plenty of other DBJ friends and family are participating throughout the weekend. Invisible Starlight

A new Universal Cave 45 hit shelves this week! Invisible Starlight is a ripping tune by an unknown midwestern funk outfit with a driving backbeat and soaring horns. It sounds like Ohio to us, but we can't be certain. 

However, we are sure that this band must have rocked local bowling alleys and lounges wherever they went. Universal Cave is proud to present our edit to our fellow 45 loving movers and groovers.

On the flip, The Beat Broker rounds out the original with his signature style and an impeccable ear. The Kind Dub's sun drenched delay and reinforced drums ensure that Invisible Starlight will shine on any dancefloor.

Michael The Lion EP (Soul Clap Records)

This record is the culmination of a few years worth of tinkering and experimentation with the Michael The Lion project - live instruments and voice alongside classic disco textures - all with a positive vibe. Wonderful lyrics and melodies from Amy Douglas and a fire remix from Bosq, whose work I've long admired. Uplifting vibes for a time when lift is sorely needed.

Tonight features Dust + Dignity, an educational experience promoting dialogue + advancing social justice through the exploration of the relationship between music and visual art.

Bruce Is My Sanctuary

A warm, funky, weird, international acid trip for your ears.

This mix was inspired by a couple things – the first was that I spend a lot of time in dance music centered environments. The untz untz, while I love it, can get a little overwhelming for me after hours or while traveling. So, for a lot of the mixes I've done lately, I have taken a more hi-fi home listening / headphone experience approach so that you can wiggle around in your underwear while you clean your house, decompress post-gig, or have a trusty audio travel companion.

The second source of inspiration was looking back at a collection of mixes I recorded at a summer residency I had two years ago at a fancy, highbrow rooftop pool. The only reason I like gigs like that is because you're strictly there to set a vibe, and not pressured by a dance floor... and the view is nice, of course. I revisit those recordings often – they consist of a lot of dub, African, Latin and Brazilian funk and disco – you know, balearic stuff. Fit for a hot afternoon by any body of water.

This mix was recorded to cassette tape and then digitize, this is the result!

This is a faithful recreation of a vintage re-edit originally on the Hot Tracks label and is very rare! My DJ partner Steve Shakewell put in a request that I re-do this edit and I assumed it would be a breeze but it was really tough! I can't imagine how this was done on tape in the early 80's! Anyways, it's a great tune and a great edit and now you can spin it!
