First Choice

So after listening to Del drop like nine zillion sampled-to-death Philly studio a capellas at the CaveCast live podcast, Shawn Ryan and I got to emailing our favorite flips of First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder" back and forth.  This isn't the canon of First Choice flips, just our favorites.

To start, here's the seminal Shep Pettibone version at the root of this "tree" so to speak -



Keeping it close to Philly, Shawn brought up this jam by Vaggio (yeah, Vaggio, I know) on Josh Wink's Ovum



This Ja Ru version is something I came across on Juno the other day - really top shelf mellow ambiance.



Of course, there's the amazing Butch flip which keeps a lot of the vogue energy of the Shep Pettibone and Frankie Knuckles mixes.



Speaking of 80s vogue, there's this Nicholas track, which basically flips half of Larry Levan's playlist at once - from MFSB to the the house preacher.



Boom!

CaveCast with Tripledouble

Magic Fly

This is a cover of Space's "Magic Fly" that was apparently recorded and rushed to the American market before Space's version could be distributed. I think good space disco tracks are rare, but both versions of "Magic Fly" fit the bill.

DJ Apt One - RC Groove

I have an original track on a new compilation from LA's PYT Records. The compilation features some slo-mo and laid back disco cuts from some of my favorites in the game like Venice Beach and Solidisco.  I'm really excited to get this new record out there, I have been sitting on it and playing it for a while. It was originally intended to be a part of my full-length record I am working on, but it just didn't seem to fit.  It features a couple samples you might recognize (RIP Donald Byrd), but the main groove is just me ripping it on my bass guitar. Witch Queen

Witch Queen was a studio project from the legendary Gino Soccio. The A side of this 12" is a cover of T-Rex's panty dropper "Bang A Gong," and the B side, "Witch Queen," is also credited to Marc Bolan. I can't find a T-Rex version of "Witch Queen," so it looks like he wrote it for Soccio's project before his untimely passing. The end result was a truly unique fusion of Italo Disco & Glam Rock.

Let It Happen

The homie Billy W of Robotique recorded an excellent mix for the eclectic Vodercast Series. Here's the mix and some words from Voder...

Billy W. is one half of the Robotique DJ'ing team and is a local Philadelphia producer and record digger. With roots in New York City, Billy started DJ'ing at soul and funk nights and created sets that eventually incorporated disco, house, techno and a variety of genres. In Philadelphia, he helped establish the Robotique and Liaison parties, which celebrated eclecticism and brought artists like Ron Trent, Kon & Amir, Runaway, Beautiful Swimmers and Trus'me to the city and contributed to the already strong dance and club scene. In 2010, Billy slowed down his DJ'ing schedule and became more involved in production. He currently has releases on Nordic Trax, Hamilton Dance Records and Bullet:Dodge, with forthcoming releases on Kinfolk, Sound Between Movement and Young Robots. He joins us for VODERcast .020 with a very eclectic mix and if you're expecting a 4/4 beatdown, this is not for you.. if you are looking for some headspace and something to marinate on, then get in2 it for sure.
