Motown Jawns

Thanks to Lil Dave & Junior, Motown On Mondays expanded to Philadelphia a couple months ago. This Monday, Coolout, who is responsible for the Disgo remixes, is making his MOM debut. To celebrate, he released 15 Motown sample based beats and blends. That's right, FIFTEEN! Dig in jammers. You can stream or download them from Soundcloud, find them on HeartThis or grab the whole pack on Mediafire.

Papa

The vocal version is one of my favorite songs ever, but the instrumental flip has a charm of it's own.

Year of the Edit - DJ Apt One & York St. Hustle

Each week in 2011, the "Year of the Edit," Dollar Bin Jams and Young Robots Records will be debuting one exclusive edit for your enjoyment!

I put together this edit for my boys York Street Hustle - a full-on motown sound machine out of Philly. We are doing a show together this Friday at World Cafe Live - a couple live sets bookended by some funk and soul on the wheels by yours truly.

If you dig the sound, grab a ticket!

DJ Apt One's TSWP April Top 10

This has been a hell of a month at Elena's in West Philly. JJC and I are rolling with our new Monday and so far it has been a very disco and vocal house affair, thanks to an amazing core crowd, some of whom were deep into the post-Paradise Garage scene in Newark and New York in the 1980s onward.

Tech Support was an incredible affair - the spot was packed to the gills. Kenny Raw played a funk set that pretty much made my jaw hit the floor. I knew maybe a half dozen of his tunes over the course of his set but the crowd was going bananas for it. The night ended with a 10+ minute near-dance-riot to Fela Kuti's Zombie - the bouncer was looking over my shoulder like "when is this song gonna end?" but there was never a good time to fade it out - people were through the roof with every breakdown. God bless West Philadelphia.

We recorded a portion of the night and hopefully I'll be able to post that at some point.

The following is a list of tracks that have been killin it at Elena's over the course of the past month. Most of these are tracks I've been dropping, but there are a few that I've heard Kenny and JJC play, including the numero uno joint - an original tape edit / cover / mashup from the 80s by Clubhouse. I've had some requests to start a TSWP podcast, and if I have time to do that I will, but in lieu of that, here's a list of that good good that's been pumping through the speakers.

With the exception of the Mr. Matawe track and the Clubhouse track, all these songs are easily available for purchase - the older ones through Amazon and the newer ones through Beatport and such. Go grab em, and support great music!

Just a reminder, JJC and I are at Elena's every Monday night, no cover. Tech Support occurs maybe once or twice irregularly throughout the year. Elena's Soul is at 4912 Baltimore Avenue in West Philly. From the other side of the Schuylkill, take the 34 trolley to 49th.

1. Clubhouse - Superstition/Good Times
2. King Britt f/ Byron Stingily - Get Up (King Britt's Old School Dub)
3. Fela Kuti - Zombie
4. Flying Fish - Mr. Matawe
5. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - Bad Luck
6. RCMP - Mustache Love (Original Mix)
7. Pirupa - Get Funky
8. Sister Sledge - Lost In Music (12" Mix)
9. DJ Sneak - You Can't Hide From Your Bud (A-Trak Mix)
10. Salsoul Orchestra - Ooh I Love It (Love Break)

Bonus, Number 11:

If you don't like it, get the fuck out

This is the other Mary Jane Girls song for rap fans. The Mary Jane Girls song being, of course All Nite Long, which was sampled by Mary J. Blige, Big Daddy Kane, Redman, LL and Jay-Z among others. But In My House was a Billboard R&B #1 in '85 and is def the fucking jam. Doesn't get played out nearly enough if you ask me- and that's why I'm posting the shit.

The best part of the Mary Jane Girls is easily the fact that they are Rick James' girl group (a counter to Vanity 6?), and each member of the band adopted a Rick-esque girlie persona. JoJo was the "female Rick James," Maxi was a dominatrix, et cetera. I think there was a Valley Girl too. I dunno.

Needless to say, pretty much everything Rick every wrote and produced, all the way on down to Eddie Murphy's Party All the Time was monsterous, even if the act singing the song, as in Eddie's case, was subpar. I don't care who you are or what you do, you need more Rick in your life.
