CVS + Nas

Here's a little edit I threw together when Bird Brain dropped last November. It's a combination of both versions of Monster Island and a verse from Nas' Halftime. I challenge you to find a use for it...

DJ Apt One - Show Me What You Got b/w The Tilt

I have a new single out today on DJ Eleven's 11-Inch Records - some deep and funky disco jams that will most certainly go well with your mesh tank top and your best dancing shoes. Really excited that Eleven (of the world famous Rub) gave me the opportunity to get these tunes out there and we'll be celebrating this Thursday, July 15th at Von in NYC (3 Bleecker Street in the basement).

The record is available today at iTunes and Gigacrate, and I'll update the site with links to Turntable Lab, Juno and Amazon as those go live (been a bit of a distro snafu).

New Woolfy vs. Projections Edit

Here's a brand new tasteful rub from Tokyo's Corporate. In his own words...

This one is for those of you who, like me, prefer lingering somewhere between dance-party mode and spaced-out deep-thinking mode.

More from the Bar-b

In light of Dj Apt One's post yesterday I've decided to add a few more coals to the fire with one of my favorite barbecue jams by The Main Source entitled "Live At the Barbecue"! Nas is also on this record with one of his many amazing verses "When I was twelve I went to hell for snuffin Jesus" Nas. This is a classic I love more and more every time I hear it. Enjoy!

Living In A World Of Trouble

Lately I've been ripping some of my deeper 45s, like this one by Samson & Delilah The BOSS Six entitled "Living In A World Of Trouble". This funky piece of wax was recorded in Upper Darby, PA in 1974, but don't be fooled, it grooves hard and has a solid crunch to it. I noticed that this record is not listed on Samson & Delilah The BOSS Six' discogs page so that's pretty cool too. Enjoy

By the way I have to shout out my 'ol head homie Ric Record for this one..Thanks!

Messing With That Indo Weed

The homies over at Top Billin have been posting their favorite DnB versions of hip hop songs so I thought I'd share mine. I love how it transitions from an identifiable hip hop track with a little shuffle to a DnB song around the 1:40 mark. That's always a fun moment for dancefloors.

Radiation Funk

"Radiation Funk" by Maxwell is a well recorded, warm and gritty funky 45 from 1979. Maxwell was from Columbia, PA which is not to far from the notorious TMI nuclear power plant that melted down in yes, you guest it, 1979. "Radiation Funk" is warning people about the dangers of the nuclear power plant and everyone listened because the track soared to #2 on local radio charts. Enjoy this funky treat!

The Woman with the Golden Voice, Ros Serey Sothea

Ros Serey Sothea is hands-down the greatest Khmer female singer to ever touch a mic. Her voice is visceral, soulful and clear. You probably won't understand a thing she says, but you know exactly what she's feeling. Here in Cambodia, 32 years after her tragic disappearance during Pol-Pot's Khmer Rouge, Sothea remains a symbol of romance, strife and beauty. She crossed genres seamlessly, she survived abusive relationships, she worked in the rice fields and sang for the Khmer Rouge against her will. She is deeply cemented in the consciousness of Cambodian people, and after a listen to her loud, vibrant voice (from a woman only 5 feet tall), you can begin to imagine why.

My Basement Flooded

Last week my basement flooded, but only one crate got wet. It was a box of 45s. luckily, I was able to dry them off and save them. So here is a mix of eleven records from that crate, one for each stair in my staircase leading down to the basement. Enjoy

DISCO FUNK!

This weekend I'm gonna be up in Philly guesting at Shawn Ryan's awesome monthly, HURRAH, and it seemed like the perfect time to come out of posting obscurity and lace the blog with some jams.

But first, a plug for the party...

I'm big into disco tracks that skirt the line between disco, funk and uptempo soul. Tracks that either came out around 1975, or sound like they did, ie before there was a established disco four-on-the-floor "sound." Even better if they're pressed on a 12". Here are a few winners in that vein...

Silver Lining - Silver Lining | Divshare | YSI | 320 kbps

Such a killer track, and clocking in at 9 minutes!

Fessor Funk - Love Is Such A Good Thing, Part 1 & 2 | Divshare | YSI | 320 kbps

I assume this is called "Part 1 & 2" because of a previous release on 45 that split the song in two, but not really sure. This is on the b side to a track by the Honeybees.

Patti Jo - Make Me Believe In You | Divshare | YSI | 320 kbps

Pretty famous track on the Sceptor comp, Disco Gold. Written by Curtis Mayfield and mixed by Tom Moulton... is that an all star team or what?
