Golden Round Circus

It's been a while, but Universal Cave couldn't fool around no more: we have a new 45 available now, featuring two edits from Stockholm's The Keeper!  UC005 is music for sideways times when down is up and up is down. “Golden Round Circus” and “I Couldn’t Fool Around No More” are spiritual kin to Michael Wynn Band’s “Black Night” and Straight Shooter’s “Frame of Mind.” Piccadilly Records summed it up well:

“"Golden Round Circus" takes your breath away from the off, sucking you into a zero gravity groove before the metallic synths, reverb soaked snares and trippy sequences make lights and colours swirl before your eyes. Weird delayed vocals and snaking synth lines take things to the next level, turning your brain inside out while your limbs move of their own accord. B-side cut, "I Couldn't Fool Around No More" dons its boat shoes and gets stuck into a tasty yacht boogie, soaring into the sunset on open drum breaks, guitar solos and multitracked harmonies. One for cosmic heads and Balearic beards alike, this offering from the Fasaan man is another essential release for Universal Cave.”

Universal Cave on Ain't No Big Thing Radio

Universal Cave was on DJ Shmeejay's Ain't No Big Thing radio on Sunday. The first hour is our mix of demented and inept continental grooves, followed by Shmeejay throwing down some more delights for the diggers. Stream or download the whole show from Soundcloud, or just grab U Cave's mix here.

Owner Man Skank

I've been listening back through some neglected records, looking to sell them to someone who will appreciate them more than I have been. In doing so, I've also rediscovered a number of jams I still love and really enjoy. This Tapper Zukie produced 45 only dub is one of them.

Before You

Talk about a sick 45rpm! I bought this record from one of my favorite dealers in PA, this guy even does house calls! The story behind this record is pretty sweet, the group, "Custer's Last Band" is originally from Lancaster, PA, and had a huge local following back in the early 70s. The 10 piece band wrote two of their own tunes that charted on Lancaster's WLAN Radio. Custer's Last Band featured 3 lead singers with horns and a classic Hammond B-3 organ. This 45 is very rare and hellafunky, definitely a keeper. Enjoy!

Living In A World Of Trouble

Lately I've been ripping some of my deeper 45s, like this one by Samson & Delilah The BOSS Six entitled "Living In A World Of Trouble". This funky piece of wax was recorded in Upper Darby, PA in 1974, but don't be fooled, it grooves hard and has a solid crunch to it. I noticed that this record is not listed on Samson & Delilah The BOSS Six' discogs page so that's pretty cool too. Enjoy

By the way I have to shout out my 'ol head homie Ric Record for this one..Thanks!

Thee Headcoats

Siiiiiiiick mid-90s garage rock covers of two of my favorite punk tunes - The Lurkers' "Shadow" & Chelsea's "No Escape." Sadly, I couldn't find any photos of the 45's label and hand stamped sleeve.

Derek's Daily 45

For anyone who's not familiar with Derek's Daily 45, it's easily one of my favorite mp3 blogs. Derek is a California based musician and record collector who is generous enough to archive his rare 45s and share them with the world. I currently have a playlist of 100 tracks from him, so I'd say the quality of his posts is unparalleled. Below are links to a couple of my recent favorites to get you started. If you enjoy what you hear, get on his email list and all of the 45s will come straight to your inbox.

All I Can Tell You Is This...

I'm making a track right now with the dude who played bass on this:

The Parliaments - (I Wanna) Testify
Zshare | YSI | 320 kbps

Plus other P-Funk members. The track we're doing uses tapes of a lost analog 4-track jam session from back in the day. I've basically been peeing my pants about this news for about 48 hours.

Phil-L.A. of Soul 45s

Periodically I'll have a genre-specific record ripping binge. I have a non-dance oriented residency every Sunday at North Bowl in Philly, and I've been finding the urge to play a lot of soul and R&B. Unfortunately, most of my soul collection is sitting in shoeboxes. So last week I took out a stack of 45s and went to work.

Right there at the beginning of Box Number One was a solid grip of Phil-L.A. of Soul singles. All in all it's a good imprint, featuring early work from one of my favorites, Little Beaver and also a number of releases by later Philly movers and shakers such as Harold Melvin, The Peoples Choice and curiously named outfit The Philly Sound.

Cliff Nobles and Co.'s The Horse (1968) and The Fantastic Johnny C's Boogaloo Down Broadway (1967) were the two chart singles that jumped off the label, which was super prolific in the late 60s. A decent percentage of the subsequent Phil-L.A. Of Soul discography is either songs riffing on The Horse or Broadway (Hitch it to the Horse, Cool Broadway etc). Not surprisingly, these cuts are also the title singles from the label's two LPs. (Many people also know The Horse as the single from the Booker T and the MGs cover album with the bangin metallic silver cover art.)

Phil-L.A. of Soul eventually put out a few Miami-based artists and then disappeared after the late 70s.

Anyways, if you've ever had a dusty finger for 45s, these two should be quite familiar.

My apologies for these records sounding dusty and hissy and burnt as hell but hey, they're records that used to live in somebody's basement that now live in a shoebox at my house.

Wedding Jamz

Once or twice a year I DJ a wedding, and I usually welcome the opportunity because, in short, somebody's Dad is giving me a financial incentive to rip a whole bunch of grandma-appropriate funk, soul and rock DBJs. Of course, I ripped some non-DBJs, but hell no you can't have 'em - I'm a stickler for the formula.

I ripped something like 30 records getting ready for a wedding that I'm doing this afternoon. Here are two.

Kool & The Gang - Be My Lady | Zshare | YSI | 320 kbps

Mongo Santamaria - Lady Marmalade (7") | Zshare | YSI | 320 kbps

P.S. Always treat the DJ right, he has the power to play "Put It In Your Mouth" at your wedding.
