Our Generation

This week the legendary Nu-Mark posted a top shelf edit of Ernie Hines' mega classic "Our Generation." Dude had access to the multi tracks & even shares the instrumental and acapella! To access a download, you have to share your email address. It's a pain, but it's worth it!

Cave Jams

I do a monthly party called Universal Cave with my friends Anthony Vogdes, Brian Cassidy & Tony Modia. The motto is "forward, deep, and free" & it's reflected in the music. It's a great chance for me to bring out my post-punk & cosmic records, and I'm always trainspotting dub techno and random rock cuts from the guys. A couple months ago, we each contributed selections for our first mix. We spent some time sequencing the selections and I meticulously mixed them together. Here's the final result - forward, deep, and free in all of it's glory. Stream it or download it from Soundcloud below and, as always, comments are appreciated!

Definition Of

Here's a very dark and very very awesome techno track, from James Ruskin's "Definition Of EP." Get lost in it.

Marie Love

Here's a tight edit my friend Andrew Straylite recently shared with me. After listening to it on repeat for an afternoon, I convinced him to hook the jammers up with a download. He really turned the track around, shedding loads of disco cheese and highlighting a top shelf groove.

Ariwa Dub Club

Mad Professor was still killing it in 96! This has a classic dub feel, but clocks in around 123 bpm. It might be handy to file it with your Rhythm & Sound tracks.

Universal Cave is releasing a mix CD on Thursday at Johnny Brendas. U Cave consists of me, Tequila Sunrise Records' Anthony Vogdes, The Magic Message's Tony Modia & Brian Cassidy the farmer. Selections range from bayou rock & dubby post-punk to bollywood & atmospheric electronic, with plenty of Fleetwood Mac thrown in for good measure. See one of us in the booth anytime between 8 and 2 for a free copy of the CD! I'll also post the mix here next week.

DBJ brother Tom Guycot is playing a live set accompanied by Peter Dragontail this Tuesday. For a taste of his eerie, soundtrack inspired work, check out his recent live set from Ortlieb's. And for more information on the show, click here.

Soul Pickle Mix

Here's a recording of my set from The Soul Pickle in Philadelphia a few weeks ago. This Sunday they have Jamie 3:26 & DBJ homies Robotique. You can get more info on the party here. Stream or download the mix from Soundcloud below & check the SC page for a full tracklist.

Nobody's Got TIme

The chief of the disco police Jay Negron (aka J*Ski) really hooked it up with this one. He ripped the super funky 45 version of Eddy Grant's Nobody's Got Time, stitched part 1 and 2 together AND made a special 10 minute extended version. Grab both versions below:

Buk-In-Hamm Palace (Sol Power Disco Dub)

The Sol Power crew and I recently finished this dubbed out rework of Peter Tosh's underground classic Buk-In-Hamm Palace. The original cooks, but we added some extra thump for the dance floor and chopped it up to heighten the tension. It's nearly 10 minutes long so feel free to drop it halfway through when the dub kicks in for the late night crowds... that's what we do!

Save Our Love

I came across this jam a few months ago at the Highland Park Record Service. The bassline is nasty & I'll ride for the vocals too. Now I just need to track down a copy of their follow up single, Fire In My Heart. Wish me luck!

Europa Europa

Hiyooo DBJ fam. Just back from a European tour - and if you're interested, there should be a big review I did of record stores across the continent up on the Tucker & Bloom Bag Messenger blog sometime soon. There's also a photo wrap-up on my site as well. Shoutouts to Betino's Paris, SpaceHall Berlin, Flashback London and others for the great records, and many thanks to the numerous Dollar Bin Jams readers I met all over Europe (especially France - we see you!). Here's a great Europdisco pickup I came across in Berlin

Sandman

As you can see, I'm catching up on my Soundcloud listening, and Tim Zawada's newest edit made it all worthwhile. The hypnotic vocals would make Kenny Dixon Jr. proud.

Gotta Tape I Wanna Play

This has been a staple in my sets for years. Now Greg Wilson's giving away a wav on his Soundcloud...

What Goes Around Comes Around

You can expect nothing but rare grooves & quality edits from Underdog, and this is no exception. BlackSmoke's vocalists are a force to be reckoned with. Fortunately for us, Underdog managed to squeeze a couple more joyful minutes out of the track.

The 8th Day

Recently, I scavenged a copy of the 8th Day's self-titled LP from the trash at a flea market. Here's my favorite cut: the heartfelt closer.

Third of the Storms (Party Bros. Remix)

The Party Bros. (aka Chris Burns & Gavin Holland) have a fresh remix of Mike Simonetti's Third of the Storms for you. It's a stripped-down, dubby burner that strikes a unique balance between mechanical and human. It's not often that I encounter minimal tracks that I'd like to hear during the daytime.

Download it from the Soundcloud player below & check out their page for an alternate reprise version.

Heike

My favorite of the 3 mixes & the only one not available digitally. Problem solved.

Ricardo Villalobos - Heike (Nelson Machado Mix)

SyntheTigers Fever

Here's a tasteful edit of Isaac Hayes' version of Fever, courtesy of our homies, The SyntheTigers. The drums on this knock pretty hard. I'm thinking this will get a great dance floor response.

What I Like

This competes with Wide Boy Awake's Chicken Outlaw for the best band shot ever. It's a solid cut too. If you don't know it, you may recognize it as the sample source of a big track from a couple years ago.

Free Download of Joy Revision Edits

In late 2010, Gazeebo International released a few of my disco edits. They are pretty straight forward cut & paste jobs of a Sylvester classic, a Haircut 100 b-side, and a Dennis Coffey cut. Now you can have them all for FREE! Downloads are enabled in Soundcloud. Please leave comments if you grab them!

You can also grab all 3 in a zip file here:

Europa

Hello DBJ fam. While drinking beer on the street in Berlin early this week I ran into one of our friends in Helsinki 78-82. We were talking about digging and all the things that nerdy DJs talk about, and he reminded me that I actually post on this blog and I should, uh, actually post more. Hopefully I'll keep Shawn from getting carpal tunnel syndrome. I'm in Paris right now, and I have some EU and UK shows coming up, and if anybody can make it to them, I promise some TUNES! Well hopefully I can re-commit to it, and here's a topical and sexy lil' gift to say "I'm sorry:"

DMZ Classic

Early DMZ records were pretty dope, like this super stoned beat from Loefah. It's dubstep I can actually get down with. I noticed it's going for a pretty penny (pence?) on Discogs, so I thought I'd give it a fresh rip...

Loefah - Mud

The Flower

The Flower is a quality slow house cut with great pads, vibes & piano. It's a shame it only clocks in at 4 minutes. And you gotta love the mix title. Mature indeed.

Freedom Dub

Here's a cool dub track from Brenda Fassie, a famous South African singer. I found it at Jerry's earlier this year while I was at the listening station. So, big shout outs to Johannesburg & Pittsburgh!
