I want to do a little series on Bad Boy sample sources, now I'm not going to post "Can't Hold Me Down", "It's All About The Benjamins" or anything obvious like that. I'm going to focus on lesser known songs that have great original sources like Mic Geronimo's track "Nothin' Move But The Money". Puff's producers were definitely on point when they looped up Nona Hendryx's "Transformation" for this record. It's a sick track to spin out as well as a great listen. I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Cosmo and Ayres from The Rub. We chopped it up about RCMP, Philadelphyinz, Pittsburghese, our Young Robots label project, the old Paradise at Key West and the brief but spectacular Philly career of DBJ's own Mike Tee.

Relative Q and I also did a guest mix with lots of disco, new and old. Ayres and Cosmo also mix it up on some old school rap shit.

40th B-day

Ok, so last Friday I djed Olga Rivera's b-day party - it was mad fun! Olga's story is actually pretty sick, she is a freestyle singer from back in the day. Mrs. Rivera put out a lot of records during her career, but one of her most popular jams is "Looking Through The Window". It originally came out on wax, but was recently featured on "Freestyle Roots" Vol. 2 in 2008. Enjoy!

I realize Endless Bummer, Pink Skull's latest LP, has already gotten a bunch of press, but it's earned it. BUY THIS RECORD. They really surprised me with the organic and warm nature of this material. All time homie and my partner in crime for the monthly party Dirty Bombs in DC, DJ Meistro, recently came back from a summer in Nigeria and brought with him a ton of afro funk, disco, and rock lps and 12"s. I'm jealous.

Anyhow, he put together a killer mix of some of the best tunes he unearthed, called Jigawa Groove. This mix is crazy, full of funk bombs, disco bangers and some really ill psych rock kinda stuff. Check it here:

On Top Of The Bagel Shop

I was in NY looking for records maybe 6 years ago at Fatbeats and I stumbled across this new release called "World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing". At the time I was djing almost every weekend for my B-boy crew DvC so I was always looking for that funky record that could separate me from the other DJs at the jams. Here is one record that helped me achieve that goal. The track off "Love's a Real Thing" that always got the room buzzing is called "Better Change Your Mind" by William Onyeabor which for your information is labeled incorrectly on the vinyl. Robots In Heat

San Francisco's Robots In Heat just blessed the world with a new mix of deep & funky prog, folk and cosmic jams. As I write this I'm on my third listen and I can only identify "that one thing DJ Shadow sampled that one time". Feel free to leave comments if you can come any closer with track IDs - I'd love to know what half of this stuff is. The sequencing of this mix is top notch too. RIH clearly worked hard to string these grooves together into a cohesive package, complete with smooth, seamless transitions. This ranks with Henrik Schwarz, Âme & Dixon's The Grandfather Paradox as one of the best mixes I've heard this year. Anyone who had RVNG's Purple Brain mix in heavy rotation needs to give this a listen.

I realize I've been MIA on the blog lately and I'm gonna try to get back in the regular swing of things. To start things off, here are a couple of disco rap jams that share the same title.

First up is Lady B's classic Philly track from 1979. Her raps... ehhhhh but it's one of the first recorded female raps and she holds her own ok. I buy disco rap records kinda compulsively, so if you are into early rap tracks definitely check this one.
