Lately I've been ripping some of my deeper 45s, like this one by Samson & Delilah The BOSS Six entitled "Living In A World Of Trouble". This funky piece of wax was recorded in Upper Darby, PA in 1974, but don't be fooled, it grooves hard and has a solid crunch to it. I noticed that this record is not listed on Samson & Delilah The BOSS Six' discogs page so that's pretty cool too. Enjoy

Messing With That Indo Weed

The homies over at Top Billin have been posting their favorite DnB versions of hip hop songs so I thought I'd share mine. I love how it transitions from an identifiable hip hop track with a little shuffle to a DnB song around the 1:40 mark. That's always a fun moment for dancefloors.

Radiation Funk

"Radiation Funk" by Maxwell is a well recorded, warm and gritty funky 45 from 1979. Maxwell was from Columbia, PA which is not to far from the notorious TMI nuclear power plant that melted down in yes, you guest it, 1979. "Radiation Funk" is warning people about the dangers of the nuclear power plant and everyone listened because the track soared to #2 on local radio charts. Enjoy this funky treat!

The Woman with the Golden Voice, Ros Serey Sothea

Ros Serey Sothea is hands-down the greatest Khmer female singer to ever touch a mic. Her voice is visceral, soulful and clear. You probably won't understand a thing she says, but you know exactly what she's feeling. Here in Cambodia, 32 years after her tragic disappearance during Pol-Pot's Khmer Rouge, Sothea remains a symbol of romance, strife and beauty. She crossed genres seamlessly, she survived abusive relationships, she worked in the rice fields and sang for the Khmer Rouge against her will. She is deeply cemented in the consciousness of Cambodian people, and after a listen to her loud, vibrant voice (from a woman only 5 feet tall), you can begin to imagine why.

This weekend I'm gonna be up in Philly guesting at Shawn Ryan's awesome monthly, HURRAH, and it seemed like the perfect time to come out of posting obscurity and lace the blog with some jams.

I'm big into disco tracks that skirt the line between disco, funk and uptempo soul. Tracks that either came out around 1975, or sound like they did, ie before there was a established disco four-on-the-floor "sound." Even better if they're pressed on a 12". Here are a few winners in that vein...

L.A. News

Dollar Bin Jams friend and co-conspirator Ed Blammo just sent this over...

This Saturday, May 29 I'm extremely psyched to be putting on a show with L.A. News from (you guessed it) Los Angeles.

LA News is a DJ/Producing duo formed in Los Angeles in 2008 consisting of long time friends Mike Venneri and Dustin Torres. Originally formed as a means to bring their favorite up and coming Los Angeles dance music to the masses, LA News has gone on to play out live and produce original songs and remixes. Their debut mix entitled "Rolls Royce'n" was a big hit in the local LA scene and their follow up mix albums "10 & 12 O'clock" have gone on to receive critical acclaim by some big names, enabling them to play sets with Binary records at some high profile gigs in LA. In 2010 LA News plan to concentrate more on original songs and remixes and continue to rock more crowds with their dynamic live sets.

DJ Apt One - Down and Derby Anniversary Mix

This is a mix I made for my homies who are celebrating the 4th anniversary of one of the coolest parties in the world, Down and Derby. It's a roller disco party and I wanted to put together some jams that I've played there over the years (as well as some more obscure joints), but I also wanted to play with the depth to the roller dance "genre."

I remember going to roller skating parties as a kid and dancing to new jack swing, hip hop and R&B, but obviously the genre is most closely associated with funky disco from the 70s. However, 80s funk, house and even early techno were roller groovers in various cities and eras so I had to toss some of those in as well. And if you go to Detroit, Kenny "Moodymann" Dixon is still doing it up roller-style with soulful sounds, house and more. So really, it's not so much about the roller skates and more about just straight up groovin on the dancefloor to anything worth dancing to!

I Want It To Be Real

John Rocca killed this record. In fact, it was a number one hit on the US club play chart in 1984. Prior to this record John was the lead singer of the group Freeez who posted their number one hit "I.O.U." in 1983. Rocca went on to produce many bands, but charted his last number one hit "Shine" in 1993 with the group Midi Rain. Hope you enjoy the record as much as I do!
