Michael The Lion - Most Known Edits

My latest EP of edits under the Michael The Lion moniker are now available from London-based Giant Cuts Records. This vinyl-only release features four tunes which kind of showcase my MO - sampled grooves and lots of my own live instrumentation and percussion. Some of these tunes you may recognize from my live sets from over the years - strictly dancefloor jams - keepin it funky and uplifting as best I can!

Very flattered to have been asked to put these out. I never really intended Michael The Lion to be a project that was edit-oriented (stay tuned for more originals coming soon) but I'm very happy that amazing edit-oriented labels like Razor-N-Tape and now Giant Cuts have graciously put up their hard-earned money to press my tunes. No better feeling than holding a record of your jams in your hands.

Golden Round Circus

It's been a while, but Universal Cave couldn't fool around no more: we have a new 45 available now, featuring two edits from Stockholm's The Keeper!  UC005 is music for sideways times when down is up and up is down. “Golden Round Circus” and “I Couldn’t Fool Around No More” are spiritual kin to Michael Wynn Band’s “Black Night” and Straight Shooter’s “Frame of Mind.” Piccadilly Records summed it up well:

“"Golden Round Circus" takes your breath away from the off, sucking you into a zero gravity groove before the metallic synths, reverb soaked snares and trippy sequences make lights and colours swirl before your eyes. Weird delayed vocals and snaking synth lines take things to the next level, turning your brain inside out while your limbs move of their own accord. B-side cut, "I Couldn't Fool Around No More" dons its boat shoes and gets stuck into a tasty yacht boogie, soaring into the sunset on open drum breaks, guitar solos and multitracked harmonies. Excellent Reception Podcast

Friend of DBJ, radio veteran, Illvibe chieftan, cool dad and all-around Philadelphia good guy lil'dave has started a truly dope new podcast called Excellent Reception.

 Podcasts are getting to be a dime a dozen these days, but Excellent Reception can be distinguished from the pack in many ways.

 First, and most importantly, the music is dope - funky and soulful. Second, Dave doesn't just play music, he weaves you a web of knowledge that connects the music you're hearing to a broader narrative. He takes the music out of a vacuum and uses his experience and his ear to gives it meaning. Third, the production value is super pro - a big thing in the lo-fi world of podcasting.

 Great stuff Dave!

Hooked Returns to Philly - September 12th!

After a hiatus of almost four months, Hooked is back at Franky Bradley's. This is a night of disco classics and the music they inspired - truly one of the best parties I have the honor of playing. I did a big interview before the last Hooked with the Philly Weekly - check it out if you wanna learn more about the things that inspired Del, Shawn and I to get down like this - in part it has to do with the parties that some of our DBJ homies have had me guest at over the years, including Beam Me Up in Tornonto and Go Bang in SF.

Heart Divine

Lustre is producer Jeffrey Levi Fry (of Superprince & Peter Dragontail) and vocalist Leah Kauffman. Heart Divine, their debut EP, was inspired by the iconic Divine Lorriane Hotel in Philadelphia. It is a soundtrack to the The Najeeb Sheikh x Lapstone & Hammer Divine Lorraine Hotel Collection, which will be available on Friday from Lapstone & Hammer. According to Lustre,

"The Divine Lorraine Hotel is a symbol of peace, ambition, freedom, ruination and waste. She’s the ghost of North Broad Street; her glory long gone but not forgotten.

While writing “Heart Divine”, we tried to imagine ourselves as guests of the charismatic Father Divine in the Divine Lorraine Hotel, returning years later only to find the building boarded up and abandoned, memories emblazoned in our dreams."

Unreleased Aurra Nuggets

Family Groove unearthed enough lost Aurra tapes to release 2 albums of material. Listen to the insanely good Are You Foolin' Around below for a little taste. Here's a little insight into the restoration process:

Once again the world gets to experience a lost disco-funk masterpiece providing another glimpse into the Genius mind of Slave founding-member Steve Washington & Brides Of Funkenstein / P-Funk singer Sheila Horne Brody. Body Rock will be the second and final unearthing of the lost but found Master Tapes for the Aurra album originally recorded for Quincy Jones’ Qwest imprint in 1984.
The 24-track master tapes were transferred digitally and then mixed on an SSL board by Kamal Humphrey at his all-analog Flying Carpet Studios in Los Angeles. The result is a full sound enhanced by the natural analog process using today’s digital technology only when needed to clean up the files.

Pick up the new Aurra releases directly from Family Groove or at Juno.

Michael The Lion Edits Out Now On Razor-N-Tape

The major labels couldn't back up the presses forever - the Michael The Lion Edits are now available on 12" wherever fine records are sold! This record has a little bit of everything. Any Time is an edit of a loft classic that I did almost five years ago (as DJ Apt One). The Don is an italo/eurodisco joint reminiscent of my RCMP days. Get More is my multi-instrumental hard disco-funk take on a Philly classic (I play 4 guitar lines on it). Lastly 909s And Herb is a little collabo with my man 50 grand Sammy Bananas that has turned into a secret heater in Soul Clap's recent sets. Very excited and very honored to be a part of this label - which boasts a roster of top class editors like Dimitri From Paris, Ron Basejam and DJ Vas.
