New Baby Ford Edit

This track is a buffet of sick synth work. This version embraces acid über alles.

The Dead Suite

I just helped my friend Ryan Todd with a soundtrack edit. Here is what he has to say about the project:

I entered the world of dance music from a strange route. Before I knew Larry Levan, I knew Goblin. Before I knew Moroder, I knew John Carpenter. I would drive around the dark roads of rural Connecticut listening to horror soundtrack mixtapes and spooky cassette recordings I made using a Moog Rogue and a reverb unit. It's appropriate that my first DARKLORD edit be of John Harrison's "The Dead Suite," because it's the first time I really dreamed about a song having a structure of my choosing. "Oh, if only that middle section looped a few times longer. Oh, if only the fat were trimmed a bit", etc. Finally, after a few years of DJing and record digging, I stumbled upon the "Day of the Dead OST," and in good shape! Here was my chance to reassemble the song in the way I had always wanted to hear it; not necessarily for the dancefloor, but dark and driving enough for my own amusement and satisfaction. A little esoteric, but enjoy!

Goin' To See My Baby

This record always seems to keep people dancing. "Goin To See My Baby" is my favorite Fatback track, with it's smooth bassline and dubbed out lyrics. This song is ill.

bohdan dude

Last week I found out a co-worker of mine is getting into post-punk stuff, so I decided to put a mix together for him. By no means definitive, I was just hoping to fill a few gaps in his collection. This mix was recorded in one take using vinyl and Serato.

Funky Times

With the economy in shambles and the mere existence of Sarah Palin, we are in the midst of some funky times. Time to neutralize the negativity with the other kind of funk.

To kick things off, we've got the title track of Pleasure's 1977 album, Joyous. Then get ready for a Loft-style workout courtesy of Brazilian jazz-funk band Azymuth.

New Peter Dragontail!!!

Mr. Dragontail's newest original seems to welcome the onset of fall in Philadelphia. It's skeletal beat, melodic keys, and chilly vocoder work must be the result of early sunsets and long nights in.

Vitamin C

Last week I had a caffeine fueled conversation with Mike C. where he mentioned his love of Erasure, which prompted me to post my favorite track of theirs. This will probably not set off your dance party, but it still rules.

Wedding Jamz

Once or twice a year I DJ a wedding, and I usually welcome the opportunity because, in short, somebody's Dad is giving me a financial incentive to rip a whole bunch of grandma-appropriate funk, soul and rock DBJs. Of course, I ripped some non-DBJs, but hell no you can't have 'em - I'm a stickler for the formula.

I ripped something like 30 records getting ready for a wedding that I'm doing this afternoon. Here are two.

New Wurst Edits!

NYC's Wurst Edits just released another fine pair of tracks. This time around, Fun's Eamon Harkin touched up The Mixmasters' "In The Mix" and John Carpenter's "The End." Right now, I'm really feeling the intense drum workouts and sweet pianos on "Innit," the Mixmasters edit.

Order the 12" at Turntable Lab and they will even throw in a free Wurst Summer t-shirt.

Also, Philadelphia will be getting it's Wurst fix over the next couple months, with the return of Marcos Cabral and the premier of My Cousin Roy. More details to come.

Brand New Funk

I went to the first ever Philly DJ Day yesterday and hearing this song over the system, I forgot how fucking amazing it is.

The event itself was incredible- old heads, new heads and everybody in between- a lot of the establishment of DJs in this DJ town.

Luxxury Edits

Here are a couple of very useful edits by Baron Von Luxxury. "In Particular" has helped to warm up the crowd at Hurrah quite a few times. Also, don't sleep on the surprisingly awesome lyrics in "Systems Breaking Down." "We take our cloths off to survive" definitely grabs my attention every time.

Be sure to check Disco Workout for more from the Baron.

Nighttime World

Tonight at 10 p.m. EST (3 a.m. Tuesday in GMT) is the launch of my new weekly internet radio show on Party 934. I'm going to be mixing the show live, and I'm really excited to have this as an outlet to play some weirder/less dancey stuff that might be difficult to pull off in a club or bar. Check it out if you get a chance, or at least just allow the web stream to run while you go about your business, in order to artificially inflate my number of listeners.

It's Never Peace Beneath The East Stars / Mid 90's Murder

This is a one take all vinyl mix of the freshest mid 90's Hip-Hop. Most of the vinyl is rare as hell, so if you want a track list please email me. Other than that this mix is self explanatory. If you don't know umm just act like you do! Peace.... I spit the semi auto posing in mini photos!!!

If Neil Young Made House Music

The vocals from the Sin Mix are utter garbage, but the instrumental on the flip works well enough as filler, as the track doesn't really go anywhere. There is, however, a decent little hands-in-the-air moment that's repeated throughout the chorus, which could actually sound pretty cool at the right time of night/level of drunkenness. I'm not in love with this, but I'm strangely drawn to it. Thoughts?

CLE-BIZA

Even though I'm from Pittsburgh, I got love for Cleveland. Specifically, I got love for bona fide rap champs like Ray Cash, Al Fatz, Bone Thugs and more.

My boys The Kickdrums are behind a lot of the music coming out of the rap scene (including the ridonkulous mixtape Clangin and Swangin by Ray Cash) as well as some joints by 50 Cent if memory serves. They're branching out on some next shit- and when they slid me their new pop song Love is a Drug, I worked it into a new mixtape Skinny and I are finishing up. The way I blended it up on the tape sounded so good to me that I had to get Tilla's source tracks so I could just flip the whole damn thing.

The result is a remix/blend type joint that flips chunks of Eric Prydz's Euro rave anthem Pjanoo.

Big In Japan

Apparently the a-side was a huge hit. Well, forget about those vocals and dive straight into it's awesome synths. This is set to be a fixture in my mellow sets for a while.

Also, check out how cheesy these guys look in the pic above. Don't let the checkered sport coat hanging off of his plaid sweater dissuade you from the download though! What they lack in style, they make up for in synth.

Dancing in Outer Space

Good score here from Sweet Jane. Apparently, these are remixes of a disco classic, but there's no mistaking the signature sound of Masters at Work less than a minute into either of these tracks. The "Lunar Mix" is a straight-up Billy Werner jam, and the "Dubbed In Space version" is actually only somewhat more restrained...can't hold back that sax.
