Year of the Edit - Platurn

Each week in 2011, the "Year of the Edit," Dollar Bin Jams and Young Robots Records will be debuting one exclusive edit for your enjoyment!

This week's entry comes from East Bay honcho DJ Platurn. Plat is always strong on the edits and mixtapes and I was really happy that he was down to contribute a tune to our little project here. I'd say more but I think his work on this tune speaks for itself.

He's generously allowed DBJ to offer "Love To The World" as a free DL, and in exchange for his generosity, I'd like to encourage everybody to purchase some tunes from the edit EP that features this particular tune. It's called "Blends + Edits for the Lab" and it's available only on Turntable Lab. For this reason we will not be re-upping this particular tune when the Mediafire links expire. I know we tend to encourage our readers to buy vinyl, and keep that world alive, but we want to encourage all our readers to buy independent digital music too so that people like us can put enough food on the table to spend quality time making tunes! Sites like Turntable Lab, Juno and Beatport are very artist friendly and we encourage you all to peruse those and put some skrilla in the pockets of some independent artists.

30,000 Feet High

Wut up Dollar Bin Jammers? I have been quite busy of late and I haven't been able to post much but I shall return in the spring...Bling!...I have been traveling every weekend to a different city spinning for The 3rd Rail jam Tour's after parties. I have 5 more gigs with them all over the west coast and I am having a blast. Huge thanks to my favorite sponsor Slacker Radio for believing in me and check the station if u haven't already =Here! I have been flying quite a bit and I hate planes so I made this mix to help myself not be so scarrrrrred when taking off in one of those cheaply made air gliders. Btw peep the video of the after party at the Wobbly Barn in Killington, Vermont =Here! Enjoy the mix "30,000 Feet High" in 30 minutes. Peace Kidz

Year of the Edit - DJ Apt One - Steel It Steelers

Each week in 2011, the "Year of the Edit," Dollar Bin Jams and Young Robots Records will be debuting one exclusive edit for your enjoyment!

OK, so for a while now I've had this week circled as the "week I finally release a mixtape and associated edits that I've been sitting on forever and ever." But with the Steelers winning last night's AFC Championship game, I had to turn to the secret stash of Pittsburgh-centric gems for this joint I edited up last week -

Year of the Edit - The Bladerunners and Skinny Friedman

Each week in 2011, the "Year of the Edit," Dollar Bin Jams and Young Robots Records will be debuting one exclusive edit for your enjoyment!

This week's installment of "Year of the Edit" comes courtesy of a fine food chain of producers. A-Trak made the OG, Boston's Bladerunners made a dub edit, and YR/DBJ mainstay Skinny Friedman re-edited it to bring it up to housey heights. Now that's what I'm talmbout!

If you aren't familiar with The Bladerunners, I suggest you get learned, because those boys make some of the best edits in the biz and they're some of the best party rockin DJs on the East Coast.

Year of the Edit - Love Hangover (DJ Apt One Edit)

Happy New Year all you DBJ-ers out there!

On behalf of all of us, I'm very pleased to announce a new feature on the site - Dollar Bin Jams and Young Robots "Year of the Edit." If all goes well, we will be debuting one new edit every week in 2011, from DBJ contributors and from our vast network of friends and cronies. Young Robots is a record label I co-run with Relative Q of RCMP, Skinny Friedman and our new ace Shawn Ryan, all of whom you know well. I encourage you to stay tuned to some of the things we've got going on over there as well!

I'd like to start it off by offering up a tune I've teased here on the site before, my edit of the classic downtown tune "Love Hangover." I set out to make this intending to just have an "all uptempo" version which kept more of the feeling of the building introduction than some of the other edits of this that have been made before. I'm pretty happy with the results and hopefully you like it too.

X-Mas Tunes That Won't Krampus Your Style

I find that Christmas music generally is the worst shit ever. Talk about flogging a dead horse! This year I got to thinking that I need to get my Irving Berlin on and become a Christmas-music-making-Jew just to make the music more tolerable (I've admitted to myself that Christmas is probably here to stay so I guess I should just deal).

But hey check it out - here are some good ones: Two dudes who will dress up as Santa and have sex with your Mom!

Anyways - Happy Holidays children, and watch out for the Krampus!

PPU and Uku

And yet again People's Potential Unlimited has reached back into time and released a pair of supremely mysterious top secret jams. Fans of DâM-FunK style boogie and lo-fi soul should take a moment & check out these cuts from the vaults of Uku Kuut. Plus PPU hooked us up with an exclusive download! Here's a little insight into Uku...
Uku Kuut was born in the Soviet Union, raised in Sweden and Santa Monica California. When PPU finally caught up with him we were happy to find him still recording and producing music in Tallinn, Estonia. "I Don't Have To Cry Anymore" was Uku's first single released privately on his own label Polar Star Records in 1985. The song features Marju Kuut on vocals and Uku on Syntovox 222 Vocoder and the Oberheim DX. "Vision of Estonia" is an instrumental homage to Uku's home for the last 20 years. This will be the first time it's been available on vinyl.

Grab the 45 over at Earcave.

I Love Music

Photobucket
For a while now, I've been wanting to do a series of posts on disco era covers - those songs that were so big or so loved that everyone wanted a piece. Perhaps fitting for the inaugural post, here's the O'Jays' masterpiece "I Love Music." If I've missed any great covers feel free to let me know in the comments, or even better, send em to the blog and I'll add them to the post.

Edit: Zoinks! Just noticed the rip of Montana below is full of glitches. I'll reupload soon.

Philadelphyinz - Moombahton de Acero Vol. 2

"Bells and Whistles = summer 2011 anthem status."

-Dave Nada

This summer, Skinny Friedman and DJ Apt One made their first entry into the moombahton canon to rave reviews. Tracks from Moombahton De Acero got support from DJs across the country (and the world!). And now, Philadelphyinz is back with round 2!

Moombahton De Acero 2: MAS MOOMBAHTON MAS ACERO touches all the bases of the growing genre, from Skinny's takes on poppy house and rap hits to Apt One's forays into deeper territory. There's something here for everyone and it's entirely free!

Cosmo Baker

If you read Dollar Bin Jams and you don't know who Cosmo Baker is, you should probably punch your own self in the nuts, and then take a little time to learn up about the man.

Philly born and bred, Cosmo is a crucial link in a long chain of talented DJs in Philly - he was raised up by the generation before him and helped raise the generation after, even though he moved to Brooklyn. Pretty much every DJ and club-goer in Philly, NYC and worldwide has a huge respect for Cos and I feel very fortunate to be in music game at the same time and place as the dude. He's also always down for a 4AM pretzel on Washington Ave, so I can't be mad.

OK enough with the puff-piece. I'm mentioning Cosmo because he just redesigned his always-excellent site, and now there are more reasons than ever to go there and soak up the insane record knowledge that always spills off the page. If you're down with DBJ you should most definitely be over there getting learned!
