This Saturday, May 29 I'm extremely psyched to be putting on a show with L.A. News from (you guessed it) Los Angeles.
LA News is a DJ/Producing duo formed in Los Angeles in 2008 consisting of long time friends Mike Venneri and Dustin Torres. Originally formed as a means to bring their favorite up and coming Los Angeles dance music to the masses, LA News has gone on to play out live and produce original songs and remixes. Their debut mix entitled "Rolls Royce'n" was a big hit in the local LA scene and their follow up mix albums "10 & 12 O'clock" have gone on to receive critical acclaim by some big names, enabling them to play sets with Binary records at some high profile gigs in LA. In 2010 LA News plan to concentrate more on original songs and remixes and continue to rock more crowds with their dynamic live sets.

This is a mix I made for my homies who are celebrating the 4th anniversary of one of the coolest parties in the world, Down and Derby. It's a roller disco party and I wanted to put together some jams that I've played there over the years (as well as some more obscure joints), but I also wanted to play with the depth to the roller dance "genre."
I remember going to roller skating parties as a kid and dancing to new jack swing, hip hop and R&B, but obviously the genre is most closely associated with funky disco from the 70s. However, 80s funk, house and even early techno were roller groovers in various cities and eras so I had to toss some of those in as well. And if you go to Detroit, Kenny "Moodymann" Dixon is still doing it up roller-style with soulful sounds, house and more. So really, it's not so much about the roller skates and more about just straight up groovin on the dancefloor to anything worth dancing to!

John Rocca killed this record. In fact, it was a number one hit on the US club play chart in 1984. Prior to this record John was the lead singer of the group Freeez who posted their number one hit "I.O.U." in 1983. In the spirit of Neil's game-changing "Originals" mixtape series from the days of yore (which every digger should own), here's an "original" from one of the great rap classics.
Awesome italian-flavored dark wave from Portland duo Soft Metals. Downloaded this tune and played it out at Robo later the same night! My number one gripe with a lot of new wave/cold wave/dark wave/italo tunes is that the vocals are either cheesy or weak (or both), but Patricia's voice is bold and haunting.
I guarantee we're going to hear more about these two in the near-future. Look for them on the west coast supporting Indian Jewelry, Glass Candy, The Chromatics, Mike Sim, etc.
Soft Metals is the love story of Ian Hixx and Patricia Furpurse played on vintage synthesizers and drum machines. Brought together in April of 2009 through a common love of late 70s to early 80s analog synthesizer music, Ian and Patricia decided to meet and write some songs. Inspiration came to them in a bittersweet variety by way of noise groups like Cabaret Voltaire, the romantic industrialists Chris & Cosey, the seductive Chicago house of Larry Heard, and the flashy italo disco of Klein & MBO and Mike Mareen. Soft Metals make dark, romantic dance music that's got something for that dramatic goth, the jackin' house head on ecstasy, or early the 1980s pop nostalgic daydreamer.

The good folks at Traxsource asked Young Robots family to contribute some Top 10 lists recently. Traxsource, along with Beatport and Juno, is one of our preferred spots for buying digital music - good file quality and nice extended mixes for DJs and electronic music heads.
This has been a hell of a month at Elena's in West Philly. JJC and I are rolling with our new Monday and so far it has been a very disco and vocal house affair, thanks to an amazing core crowd, some of whom were deep into the post-Paradise Garage scene in Newark and New York in the 1980s onward.
Tech Support was an incredible affair - the spot was packed to the gills. Kenny Raw played a funk set that pretty much made my jaw hit the floor. I knew maybe a half dozen of his tunes over the course of his set but the crowd was going bananas for it. The night ended with a 10+ minute near-dance-riot to Fela Kuti's Zombie - the bouncer was looking over my shoulder like "when is this song gonna end?" but there was never a good time to fade it out - people were through the roof with every breakdown. God bless West Philadelphia.
We recorded a portion of the night and hopefully I'll be able to post that at some point.

We've got the exclusive 320 kbps album from the man himself for those of you who will not be able to get your greasy paws on the limited run, silk screened CDs this Saturday.
Second - In case you didn't know, the bol Dave Nada from DC cooked up this whole new style of music called Moombahton - it's basically Dutch House screwed up to a Reggaeton tempo. Every time I drop Moombahton joints in the club there is a 100% chance that somebody comes up and says "I have no idea what the fuck this is but IT'S INCREDIBLE!!!" Over at Young Robots you can grab a from-the-vault Moombahton banger I've been rockin - a screwed up, tropical take on Josh Wink's epic 90s anthem, Higher State of Consciousness.
This was a "Euro Bin Jam" found at a flea market in Brussels last year, and it's become a personal favorite for warming up crowds at Robotique ever since. Definitely prefer the 45 version as opposed to the 12" mix. Short, sweet and catchy with some of the dopest synth bass ever put to vinyl!
